We used to have some pretty fucking good Thursday nights on TW. Back in the day. Coast-to-coast, pole-to-pole shenanifuckery. From Hoboken to Honolulu. From Tempe to Toronto.

I'm going to put this here so I don't lose it.

Short question: will 07+ Tundy shocks fit/mount the same as 2nd gen Tacoma shocks without modification of mounting points?

    Long scenario:

I'm looking at Dakars on the rear.

Crom is getting this with the Dakar setup I want to do (AAL minus one overload, shims added) gets full natural droop, but he is using Bilstein RCD/BE5-B110-T5 shocks and getting these awesome numbers, basically 3 inches more than with OME shocks he tossed:
    extended length: 27.28
    collapsed length: 16.34

DSM has a rear 2nd gen King extended shock for Dakars. #25001-121-Dakar. However, it falls short of max droop by a good 2 inches.
    ext 25.29
    col 16.83
    This is rather unimpressive.

Unmodified King OEM replacements for Tundies have far better numbers:
    #25001-144 Tundra 07+ Rear Shocks:
    ext 25.88
    col 15.75

If I have DSM modify those to extended (adding another inch of down travel by removing internal stops as I understand it, as they do on all extended travel), theoretically I'd get
    ext 26.88
    col 15.75-ish

Within a half inch of Crom's Bilsteins. Which would be pretty groovy. With my Leer and a Prinsu rack on full time, plus towing and camp gear/offroad crap, a slightly beefier shock would not be bad anyway.

King Toyota spec sheet for reference:
    http://www.kingshocks.com/products/oem/toyota-oem/

What I am looking into now is whether the Tundy shocks even have the same mounting design (stems at top) and relatively same geometry.

If they do not, I will look into either:
A: Modifying (flipping/relocating) the lower shocks mounts with the help of an able welder/modder and getting the #25001-121-Dakars
    B. Modifying all the rear shock mounts with the help of an able welder/modder and getting the modified Tundra shocks. Drawback here is if I ever have a need to go back to stock or if I need a temporary replacement due to breakdown or having the Kings rebuilt as needed (truck downtime)

Turns out it doesn't quite work this way. Rear Kings are extended by extending the rod end and additional inch, not by removing an internal spacer inside the shock body. Courtesy of @jberry813 :

What follows is basically a repost from the Norcal thread discussion.
    Thanks for the insight, Jason.

So, even if they do mount up the same, it sounds like the rear Tundy extended option may not be offered without pricey customization. I'll double check with DSM.

Another nearby member has offered to take pics of his mounting points etc. for me, and if they look at all promising, we will meet up to take some real measurements and likely just do a test swap of the OEM shocks to check if they even mount up the same way to put this uncertainty to rest.

Shame if they won't work out with that better overall travel length. However, even unmodified, they offer better travel than King Tacoma extended shocks for the Dakars. So...there's that. I hope I am not missing something else in the equation here.

I guess the only other way to make either option provide an extra 2 inches is to relocate the lower shock mounts on the axle. Which would also clean up clearance under the axle. Which is good.

Edit: Or I say fuck it and get the Tundras as-is, which is 1.4 less than Crom's droop, but still better than 2nd gen King Daks, or I say fuck it and get the Bilsteins, but with all the load I plan to put on at times, that skinnier tube gives me some reservation. And it costs a lot less, so that isn't OK.

Nice. I'm still working on house projects, but hope to get the BD fogs on this weekend...3rd times a charm. I can probably fit it in between paint drying time on the house project.

The big time investment now is figuring out this rear King shock issue to take advantage of the DSM sale. It isn't going really well. Their "Dakar" mod is weak: it leaves 2 inches of downtravel on the table with Dakars. In my mind, that is not a Dakar shock, and should not be advertised as such. I may go for a custom built.

@jberry813 said my current conundrum is basically why he tore all the suspension crap off this truck and started custom.

Taking a closer look at Icons. Icon's website is bloody mindedly blank on the specs that matter. BUT...

This just in...courtesy of @DVexile (regular listener, big fan), eliminating my blind spot:
Therefore...back to an earlier investigation This coilover front shock set provide 0-3.5″ (0-2.75″ on 2016+ Tacoma) of lift. Pre-adjusted to approximately 2″ of lift. A spanner wrench is available separately to adjust the coil preload. These offer extra travel to fully utilize the capabilities of aftermarket upper control arms. Includes a sway bar relocate kit. These coilovers normally are fitted with 13″ X 650 LB coils
This V.S. Series 2.0 Aluminum remote reservoir rear shock Part #56503R-EXT fits the rear of a Toyota Tacoma truck with 2.5″-3.5″ of lift. These measure 15.9″ coll. X 26.8″ ext. These would be for lift springs such as OME CS047 springs with extra leafs, All-Pro Expedition springs, etc.

Thanks for the reminders and details, Ken. I've got a little caught up in the DSM King sale, but I am leaning farther toward these custom Icons now since you've pulled back my eyelids on the Wheeler's-specific offering to pair with the Daks. Far kinder on the pocketbook, too.
Plus I've had the attention span of an 11-month old lately. :anonymous:
