I've had it with this truck! I wish the frame would just rot already.

'97 2.7. First, it blew a head gasket. Fine. I pulled the head, sent it out for a valve job, put everything back together. Checked the valve adjustment, all valves good except one exhaust valve is a little tight. Ordered a replacement shim from Toyota. That is supposed to come in tomorrow. On the drive home from work today, I get a Check Engine light. Checked the codes, found P0420 Catalyst Efficiency Low. Great, now I wonder if the coolant from the blown head gasket took out the catalytic converter or the O2 sensors. Got under the truck to pull the O2 sensors and look at them, and what used to be the O2 sensor nuts are now just mounds of rust. Worse yet, the nuts holding in the sensors are attached to studs, which are a part of the (expensive-looking) exhaust pipes! So now if I remove the sensors just to look at them, I'm almost guaranteed to snap off the studs and need a whole new exhaust pipe before AND after the cat, as well as possibly needing a new cat too! AND I need a new power steering pump, because the shaft is wobbly and noisy. I wish the frame would just rust already. How I miss my 2000 SR5 V6, which only needed a light bulb in 2 years.

 

Sounds like an obvious solution to me...

Get rid of it and buy something else.

 

Yeah, but it's a lot easier to sell something without those problems, so unless I want to take a hit, I have no choice.

 

Sorry to hear about all the problems. You really take a chance buying any used vehicle, and one with 224,000 miles on it your almost guaranteed to have issues. Hopefully you got it at a good enough price to where you can get it fixed and be able to enjoy it for a few years...

 

yea buying used with that many miles and not expecting anything is just wishful thinking.

PB the nuts every day for a week. Then use a torch on them (a little burnzomatic should be fine) and the nuts will come right off. Buy replacements at the hardware store. A little bit of work, but cheaper than a new exhaust pipe.

 

Let me see if I've got this right. Your truck is 13 yrs old and has 224k miles on it and you're bitching because it has a couple of little problems. Get yourself a new exhaust system and some new O2 sensors and be glad it didn't sling a rod.

 

I like that idea.

 

Are you going to give me the money to do that? I just spent all my money getting everything else fixed.

Like a few friends sitting at a bar, I thought I could share a little of my misery without getting it thrown back in my face. I'm a college student and I bought an old, high-mileage Toyota truck because it was about all I could afford. I thought I wouldn't have to spend as much to keep it running as a domestic vehicle, due to my past experiences with Toyota and Honda. Now it's me "whining" and "bitching" and "wishful thinking" and "just buy this and this and this," well, I simply don't have the resources you guys seem to.

 

Buy a new one and then instead of spending a couple hours removing rusted nuts you can spend hours arguing with some lame ass service manager about doing a half dozen or so TSB's

 

Been there done that. I went to college. I lived in the dorms. I had a 1980 Plymouth Horizon back then. I worked on it with a $10 wrench set from Kmart in the dorm parking lot. I had to hit the starter with a hammer to get it to start because I didn't have the time nor the money to fix it. It ran on 3 cylinders most of the time and I ran it into the ground. I made due with what I had...and I worked at McDonalds making $7 an hour. I was supporting myself for books & extras.

Oh wait...am I that old? Computers & the internet didn't exist back then so I couldn't whine & cry to anyone but myself.

Just yankin your chain man...... you're not the only person who's fallen on hard times. Some of us have lived through it and now we're older and making every effort never to see those times happen again.

Well Snapper at least now you know what not to do. You could always just drive it the way it is....with the damn code until you get enough coin to do it right or trade it for another yota with the same value. Either way, good luck with the truck.

 

i had the same prob cuz i knocked the guts out of my cat. i cut the o2 sensor off and straight piped mine you only need the upstream sensor to manage the fuel oh ya and i fixed my check engine light with a small inexpensive piece of electrical tape good luck bro

 

hey mb hang in there I know whats it like and sometime we just need someone to let us vent... and no matter what any of the guys or gals on here say at we've all gone through what you’re going through and we'll probably go through it again so hang in there and if you must sell then go for it but I think if you take a moment and think about it you'll see your better off finding the $$$$ to fix what you have than to embark on an unknown

 

if it gets you to a and b then your good... worry about college not what you drive

MB, coming here for sympathy is just like going to the "bar"....all will listen BUT most will "give it to you" just like Janster did..

Yes it sucks BUT if it can be driven with that stupid orange lite on..drive it I am....too dam cold to replace that front sensor unless I'm going to ad all my other "Mods" into the scheduled visit....
