Not sure if you guys are going to be able to help but i figured its worth a shot.

I recently got a job where the guy wants me to install new doors in his house. He wants to replace the old hollow flat doors with newer hollow raised panel doors.

The problem is that all the openings are really out of square, so my original idea was to rip out the jam and put up new prehung doors. However, when i go to square the new jam the trim will not be in the same place and the bare wall will be exposed (painting isn't an option). I could use larger trim to cover the bare areas since i'm replacing all the upstairs doors (so the larger trim might not stand out so much).

The other idea i came up with is to leave the jam alone so i won't mess the trim up and just use door blanks. With the jam being out of square i would have to cut the doors so i can keep the opening even all the way around the door. However, these opening are pretty bad and the door blanks only have alittle bit of real wood to play with along the outside edge. I would also have to mortise the door to fit the existing hinges, i have the jig and router set up for it, but this seems like a huge pain.

Any other ideas?? The job isn't for another week or so, iv'e got some time to plan out what i'm going to do.

The easiest way would be new jams and doors and then add some larger trim. I'd show him how out of square the original door opening is and explain how new doors come square (hehe). Once the trim is on and painted, nobody would notice if it was a little different from the rest of the trim in the room would they?

    Good luck.

Yeah that's what i'm leaning toward as of now, however i'm going to have to screw with the baseboard cause the larger trim will hit it.

    Any more ideas??

I'd probably go with a larger trim. Hanging a slab in a square jamb is a big enough job, let alone an unsquare jamb. I don't know your skill level, but shit happens, and when you have to start buying doors that you screwed up trying to save someone else a buck, your profit will suffer. Hollow slabs aren't real expensive, but for the trouble, it isn't worth it to me.

I hate having to do shoddy work to fit someone else's shoddy work. Cutting doors out of square because of messed up jambs.

I think prehungs and redoing the base is still going to be less work on you than hanging slabs in an out of square jamb.

Yeah the guy is a carpenter too, so i actually have to be really precise, since he knows what to look for. There has gotta be another way to do it where it'll actually look good, i think the larger trim will stick out like a sore thumb in his eyes.

356 casing (2 1/4")is common (home depot) on prehungs, so most use it on windows too. If that's what ya got then 366 looks alot like it. It has an additional detail line close to the skinny edge, but you can get it 2 1/2", 3 1/2", and 4 1/2". Not sure if Lowes/Depot has the wide ones. We don't get doors there. We special order them if different casing is needed. They come w/whatever casing already on them. Our home town builder supply stocks the 366's.
