I have a 2005 4x4 approaching 243,000. 250,000 will be plugs, belts, and flushing radiator time. I have a tremendous concern with switching over to Mobil1 or AMSOIL synthetic engine oil. I have run conventional since the Tacoma was new...so the debate is to continue or change. Even when talking to AMSOIL they kinda have reservations also...

Does your truck seem like it's consuming oil? Typically, cars that consume oil like STI's and any other turbo cars are recommended to use regular oil since synthetic doesn't burn the same way conventional does. I have also heard (from a tech) that you're not supposed to change over to synthetic unless it's within the first couple oil changes, but I am a 100% believer that's a load of horse sh$t

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" run conventional, keep an eye on it and give it hell. Congratulations on the mileage, I just hit 15k on mine....250k is a lot! I hope she serves you well up over 400k.

I suggest having your oil analyzed. Do a change like your normally do, capture a sample and send it in. If it comes back all good to go keep doing what you're doing.

Stick with convention oil. You're made it this far with no problem, why ruin the trend.

They do make high mileage synthetic - suppose to conditions seals - one reason not to switch is synthetic is suppose to get by seals on high mileage motors and the high mileage synthetic is supposed to be good for that - on the other hand like ever one is saying ya done good why F it up. Any thing major outside of normal maintenance on that 250 ??

We're running out of dinosaurs (maybe slowly enough for now), I know you all saw Jurassic Park, we'll grow some more lol. If you really feel like switching to Synthetic I don't see it being an issue, but there is no demand for it. Are there benefits that will keep your engine running longer? Potentially minimal ones. Go with High Mileage if you do, I would think.

running out of dinosaurs LOL...it's all dinosaurs and plant matter

    1) there is still more oil locked up underground and in rocks
(shale oil anyone) than humans have yet extracted

    and anyway

    2) synthetic oil comes from natural gas which comes from...hold your shorts...deep underground rock formations
or associated with other hydrocarbon reservoirs such as petroleum and fossil fuel found in close proximity to, and with natural gas

Add another vote to stay the course. There's nothing to be gained by switching now. Modern brand name oils of all kind is really good and sticking to a regular change interval is all you have to do. Synthetic is sometimes required for very close tolerance and maybe (just maybe) you get slightly more economy and performance, but as far as engine wear, well, your truck is a poster child for that!
Glad you said it, I would never, ever, put Slick 50 into an engine.

In my experience , it seemed to me that high end synthetics left things cleaner. I have swapped out higher mileage transfer cases/ transmission s and where the oil was weeping showed up because the external case was cleaner than before at the leak locations. Is it something in the additive package? I don't know but at your mileage stay the course

It made it 240K on plain old oil that obvious worked why would you want to change now? You intend on racing this thing?
