    Hi There,

I am interested in buying my first Tacoma!
I would like to buy one that holds its value the best over time. Does anyone know if there is information on what the most popular model is, most popular color and things of this nature?

I figure these things will help me with the resale a few years down the road.

    Thanks

    Brian

Limited wheels, extra rope hooks in bed.
I would think at least get the SR5 grade....Most colors seem popular....I've seen a few people regret buying black though.

my guess, based on no data whatsoever, but merely observation:

    V6
    Double Cab
    in White, Silver or Grey
    TRD trims (maybe)

Get at least SR-5. Red and blue typically have a higher resale since they're more rare. Tan and orange are niche colors but also rare. Double cab short bed and preferably V6 4x4.

There aren't many of them, but the people that want them, really want them.

    Thanks everyone for your advice.
George1441, I looked at the brochure and online already. I am asking for this extra information already knowing my needs. I am giving a quick response to your post because I would like to keep this forum on track with the question I had originally asked and not suggestions to read the brochure.
    Thanks again everyone.

Just having purchased my first Tacoma a week ago after spending over a year looking at so many different brands and models. I will give my non-professional advice.

Most people who I talked to who did buy an extended cab vs. a double cab regretted the decision even though the cost was cheaper.

Only one person I spoke to that purchased the I4 vs the V6 and they don't regret it but then do not drive it more than to and from work and getting groceries and no offroad or hills, no towing. Likes the mileage. She got it because she has always loved trucks and is not a car person. The mileage on the V6 is not bad and... it's a truck.

Black is beautiful... also hot as hell and shows every spec of dirt. I Personally like silver and last two cars have been silver due to SoCal Sun. Previous two were Black and I will never ever again own a black car. I think I will even put in my will that my hearse needs to be silver.

For resale I think minimum is the SR5.

4X4 is a choice. Lot more to repair with a 4X4, IMO. Unless you need it I would avoid it. From my shopping the Price paid and the resale was comparable. Yes you can get more for a 5 year old 4x4 TRD OR than a 4x2 SR5 but you also paid more. It equals out. If you are going to really Off Road then... duh. I see way too many sparkly TRD OR 4X4's that have never been off pavement. From Taco to Super RAM Brodozers.

Some people like Manual and some Auto Transmissions. I saw no difference in the ones I looked at. YMMV. In SoCal Traffic, I need an AT. My knees only have so many more miles to go on them. If you live in a smaller town with less traffic that can make a difference. I love the control of a Manual but the convenience of an AT.

TL : DR - You already know what you want so

    V6
    SR5 Minimum
    Double Cab
    Not Black

    Is my opinion.

Mostly good points. Definitely would avoid BLACK. Super high maintenance to keep it looking sharp. I'd go with an Auto Trans but you can't really lose with a Manual as there will always be a niche crowd demanding them.

You lost me on the 4x4 however, more to repair? Not really. I mean, I've had half a dozen 4x4 vehicles and never had anything that needed repair on them. Theoretically there is a little more maintenance for them in the long run because of Transfer Case and such, but many people never touch this part of a 4x4 vehicle and it will get them well over 100k miles.

Yea... My thinking is pretty old school... more parts... more parts to break. But then again I have 132K on my X3 I just sold and it never needed more than breaks and oil changes. Vehicles are getting a lot better these days and I think Toyota has a pretty damn good track record. I went without as I really have no need for 4X4 in San Diego and I am not the big outdoorsy type. I think it is a choice as far as resale goes which was directed at the OP question. =]

Anything with 4x4 and the tow package will make it way easier to sell down the line regardless of trim package.

Technically you're right. More stuff usually increases risk of failure. There's actually a formula for that military logisticians use. Mean Time Between Failure, Mean Time Between Repair, etc. Reliability Availability and Maintainability. All of this stuff is considered when rating the Operational Safety, Suitability, and Effectiveness for a new weapons system. :D

In all honesty though, just buy what makes YOU happy. You don't even have the truck and your worried about resale down the line? It's a Tacoma, and they all hold their value form my understanding. Don't stress it too much. If you're more worried about resale over enjoying the vehicle overtime, better save or invest your money instead of dumping a ton of it into something that will depreciate the second you drive it off the lot.
