2016 Transmission T-SB-0077-16 Shift Feeling Enhancments (PDF)

Wise man, you saved yourself a lot of time, headaches and aggravation by not listening to the "experts" who appear to have no factory training on even how to check levels.
It took me but a moment to determine that delay shifting was not a ATF or hardware fault issue but a software issue that could be verified and bypassed by using the other transmission modes until an update would come out.

Just got back from the dealer and there is no TSB in Canada.

If you are north of the border, let's all call in to Toyota Canada and voice our opinion.

 

Man. Lots of hate in here as usual. Love it. I get the logic of "Toyota made it and filled it and they know how it's done so it must be ok". That makes sense. Until you read the Toyota created document on how to check/fill that fluid to the spec (which they also created) and there are tons of them wrong.
Yes, they made it so yes they are the experts on how much fluid should be in there. But according to their own instructions and measurements, they were doing it wrong. That's all. Just humans making mistakes as usual.
Not hard to wrap the ole noodle around really. So who wants to drive their mistake assembled truck around? If you want to, cool. Your truck, you bought it, do as you like. But if someone wants it fixed I'd call that reasonable.

 

Just a heads up for everyone....

Stopped by the dealer today to see if they could squeeze me in to do the TSB. Ended up making an appointment for Tuesday.
The service writer started making noises that they will need to drive the truck and "Confirm" the shift delay prior to performing the TSB. I reminded him that it is only when cold, and that I will not be dropping it off overnight for a 30 minute TSB on a truck with a listed VIN number. I also told him that I had already been in once with low fluid, that I have a case # with corporate, and if they need any more evidence that I was having an issue then that was their problem and they would have to figure out how to be reimbursed from the manufacturer or whatever their issue is, without inconveniencing me any further. I offered to call corporate for them to get approval to push the TSB without replicating the delay. He muttered and seemed to agree to "do whatever he needed to do to get it completed for me". Fucking fuckers.

So, be prepared to fight to get it done.

 

I would just go to a different dealer. They may want your business after the warranty runs out and not piss and moan about doing the flash.

 

Sounds like you were in a Toyota dealer. I apologize if that is too negative. Shhhhhhhhh. We're not supposed to complain. On a positive note mine is the best freakin new 2016 Toyota truck that I have ever owned in the last 6 months. Got wife a new 2016 Escape last August. Total issues to date zero. And it was $12k cheaper. Ford service dept fantastic as always. Maybe we need to take our trucks to a Ford dealer to get their quality care. One can only dream.

 

I read on Facebook that a guy had the TSB performed and now his truck starts in ECT when he turns it off in ECT.

Is this true?

 

Complaining is the only way I know of ferreting out an issue. But badgering and berating is something else.
All vehicles have annoyances from time to time. I find Fords will bite you in the end with big repairs while your Toy will keep right on playing.
Not a Toy fan here, I have own and managed fleet of all kinds of makes/models, that’s how I know.

Just talked to 3 local dealership service managers . Same dumb response we have never heard of any of the transmission issue's and we do not have any T-SB reports on a fix ! When i tell them i have a copy of the report they laugh! This crap gets old. So i now have to bring them the T-SB to prove its out and to convince them its real and they still wont check my fluid properly!

 

I'd suggest that you fill your tranny first....yourself, a friend, an independent shop.... don't matter as long as it's done right...
Then...and only then...have the dealer do the TSB on your truck....

 

I called Toyota of Round Rock (closest) explained the delay shifting and not upshifting when cresting a hill with cruise, gave her the TSB number and her response was: "you'll have to leave it overnight for us to run diagnostics". I told her to pound sand and now have it scheduled at Toyota of Killeen.

 

My Toyota dealer in Fayetteville, AR fit me in today for the TSB and the truck is a lot smoother. No more delay/lurching from R to D. Thanks to OP for posting as the TSB made a significant improvement in the drivability of the truck! If you have any of the symptoms described in the TSB, i would highly encourage you to get it done!

I had the TSB installed today, but to set the record straight I did not have to P to D hesitation or clunking issue, cruise control was a bit frustrating but it fit the mold out of the box with erratic shifting in the hills, and at low speeds..2nd to 3rd I would expect a delay and overall lack of smooth power to the wheels. I did average 21mpg combo city/highway driving.

Definitely not like the first 5000 miles I put on her or the test drive experience, from that perspective a huge diff.

After the flash, smoother power to the wheels, kinda felt like 1/2 ECT on at 0-45mph...no erratic or delayed shifting in lower gears, 0-30mph. Higher speed in hills and cruise control not so much downshifting and up again..back and forth thing...less enunciated.

I have not had enough time on pedal to draw a final conclusion but overall it is an improvement yet to be measured....a little caution execute here not to get hyped up and exasperate the placebo from the flash, thanks smitty for putting that out there.

Had the tranny fluid level check at my 5k, all was reported well.

Quick observation leaned towards a slight loss in gas mileage, how much over time TBD.

Is it a bad thing? no....just wish there was higher torque to go with that flash... time will tell, until then I feel better about the whole damn thing.

 

I would call Toyota and have them soften up the dealership service dept. you want to take your truck to. They will talk real nice to you. GM customer care is this way. They get the service dept. on the phone while you are on there with GM. They call you Sir and talk all happy, sappy to you. Gripes my arse the way they talk.

 

This TSB doesn't mention the harsh 3-2-1 down shifting problem when coming to a stop (when cold).

 

Yay! TSB! In a few weeks I'm due for 6 mo. service, so I'll get this done as I still have intermittent hesitation from R to D and downshift clunk when rolling to a stop. Thanks for posting OP!

 

The dealer begrudgingly flashed mine this morning and like others have said, this thing feels like a different truck. I can't speak to the accuracy of the truck's trip computer, but I went from averaging 20-21.5 MPG on my trip from Pinehurst, NC to Charlotte, NC to 24.7 with less high revs after cresting a hill and less downshifting from the transmission when going up them. Hopefully this lasts.

 

TSB completed. All what I can say is WOW!
Drove it for about 30 miles on the part of freeway that I would usually experience the up/down shifting.vIt shifted like it should. Very happy with update.
Now all these negative threads can be closed, because Tacoma is Tacoma again!!!
I always liked my truck, even with shifting issues but now I'm absolutely love it.

I really wish someone could explain this to me. Its a warranty item right? So the dealer gets paid by Toyota right? Why the reluctance for dealers to perform these types of work? Why wouldn't Toyota want people having the best possible experience when driving their Toyota?
