And I'm back with another question for you fellas . As I stated in the new guy section I am abut to get my 3rd new Toyota Tacoma ,84 , 96 , and whatever I decide to get now .

My question is this for those who would know . How much worse can the mpg in a 2015 trd 4x4 with a 4.0 be than a new truck with the 3.5 ? Both are auto , 4 door , short bed .

I pull a light fishing boat and mainly want to go and hunt or launch boat o slick boat ramp on the river . I don't 4 wheel anymore . I only want the 4 door to get my gear out easy and keep it dry and clean .

I want the truck to be comfortable ! And economy is important also .

I have found a truck that is like new in pyrite mica but its a 15 with less than 20,000 . If I could get it for 30ish K . I would think its a fare deal to both of us .But , I know the 4.0 is a thirsty cuss in my 06 , 2wd , Tundra TSS . with the air on in summer driving like an old man around town here It struggles to make 18 mpg. 20+ in the winter time .

You fellas who know what I'm talking about I would sure like to hear your thoughts on this .

I get to do this one last time and I want to do the right thing here . Thanks for any help .

    MM

My sister-n-law has a 2nd gen and I have a 3rd gen Tacoma, the 2nd gen is more fun to drive, more low end torque and has more comfortable seats. The 3rd gen has a more modern interior, and I got 23mpg in my 3rd gen before I installed bigger tires.

Unless you're going 55-60 mph the third gen 3.5 doesn't get that great of mileage. I like to go around 70 and I'm lucky to get 18-19

I have a 2013 pyrite mica taco and love the color and the truck. I can't comment on the 2016 model.

Everyone who doesn't have a '16 will say get the '15. Everyone who has a '16 will say get the '16.

If you're that concerned about economy don't get ANY truck. Get a 6cyl Subaru Outback to tow your light fishing boat.

I love my 2016. The added technology is great. If you don't care about any of that the 2nd gen is a great truck. I had 2 of those as well.

Thanks a lot guys . We have a pyrite mica Rav4 and I just like the heck out of that color . I am going to kick the tires of the 17's before I pay for eather first . I do like the new ones a lot but my last new one was in 96 so , things have changed a lot . LOL . I'm glad I found this site as its been a comfort to read about the issues , pro's ,and con's .And yes I had to put 3 sets of leaf springs in my 96 and never pulled nothing bigger than my john boat . Well, couple of good bucks ! Alcans broke just like the rest , got the cheapest ones I could find in Dallas tx. online added a long leaf to that set and no more issues .

If that 4.0 in a 15 will do 20+ easing along in the flatlands , That's a real good thing !

I vote for 2015 also. 2nd gen is an awesome truck and 3rd gen will be available for many more years. I absolutely love my 3rd gen but wouldn't deny to the 2nd gen to anyone.

Trucks don't fall into that category unfortunately. No truck is economical as far as mpg goes.

Ive driven a 2011 DCSB OR and we now have a 2016 DCSB OR. Both identical options, 6 cyl, auto trans, etc. Both 100% stock down to the original tires.

The 2011 defintely feels more alive and powerful than the 2016. The 2011 was more comfortable too. But as far as mpg, Ive been averaging 24 highway in the 2016 and never saw above 17 highway in the 2011.

I pulled our 5x8 trailer with steel on it behind both trucks, close to the same weight and again, the 2011 just felt more comfortable in doing so.

The 2016 certainly has more ammenites but the frills and thrills dont really matter to me.

    Good luck in your purchase.

Well sir , my 96 xcab , 4 cyl 5 speed , 4x4 would make 24 mpg all day long on the road . Pulled my boat well too . Again I am just asking fellas who would know or owned both about what they think . YMMV

I also had my '14 reg cab 4x4 5 spd that never saw above 21mpg on stock tires and then never above 19mpg on 265/70-17 BFG A/T's. And it to me was a pig all the time, empty, towing, from a stop, highway speeds but I was also biased because it was my first midsize ever. Ive always driven full size V8 trucks and now Im back in one again. We have our 2016 DCSB TRD OR, a 2014 DCSB Prerunner with a 4cyl and auto trans and a 2013 F150 ext cab 302 V8 4x4.

If you're asking about a 4 cylinder that's a different question. I'm pretty sure it's the same 4 cylinder in the 2nd and 3rd gen.

    I am asking about a v6 , trd , 4x4 , 4 door , 15 and 16 .Didn't mean to confuse anyone . That 2.7 is a fantastic engine . I cant shift anymore so I sold it a year ago with 130K . Best truck I ever had .

You can get pretty decent mileage with the 3rd gen, but you have to paw paw the gas. Honestly, I wouldn't go for an older model if I was buying new. You might as well keep up with the times as the "newer" model year will always be worth a little more than the "older" model year.... unless the new is really a dud.

My 2015 got 19.5 combined when stock. The drive and overall driving experience with the 2015 is what swayed me from a 2016. For my needs, too many Bells and whistles I'd never need nor had a desire for on the 2016, and first model years are always something I steer clear of. I'd take the 2015 no matter what.

    Just my .02 cents
