I have gotten gas at pumps that shut off way too soon. I am always trying to accurately track my gas mileage and learned how to fill the tank without overfilling. After the pump clicks off, wait 30 seconds for the gas to settle in your tank then pump one more time until it clicks off. I learned this from someone who tests trucks at a magazine on TV. Been doing the for a few years now and it seems to work for me.

I would like to know more about this. I can see no way that filling the tank completely full can damage the CC. The CC is located way above the tank. How would the gas expand that much to even get to it?

A full tank is going to produce less fumes as well.

On the earlier Tacomas, the CC was under the hood. No way filling the tank could affect that canister.

I previously owned a 2003 Taco which had it's canister contaminated by overfilling. I can attest that it really can happen!

Because it's annoying to the person on the other side of the pump with it slamming off a dozen times.

By filling too much, the overfilled gas spills into the vapor tubes and travels to the canister. The canister is not designed to deal with liguid gas, only vapor. Once the liquid gets into the charcoal canister its done.

Also, by overfilling you not allowing the extra space the gas needs to expand when its heated. Gas comes into the tank quite cold, its stored below ground. Put it into a tank with a hot environent and it will expand. Again, spilling liquid gas into the lines only meant for vapor.

You also stated it will 'produce less fumes' if the tank is full. The charcoal canister is specifically meant to deal with the fumes. Thats why its there. To remove the gas vapor (fumes) from entering the atmosphere.

Its like filling a glass to the brim and trying to walk around. Some will spill over and get on your hands and the floor. Keep it below the top a bit and no spillage will occur.

I used to have a 2005 Tacoma 2.4l that I would top off consistently. I had the truck from 2005 until April this year when I bought a 2015. Never had any issues or had to replace any parts due to topping off.

True and I agree. After reading this thread I won't be topping off my 2015. Just stating my experience I had. Never knew it was an issue. Suppose I got lucky on my 2005

The no cell phone rule is... absurd. Cell phones do not make sparks and do not cause static charge. They CAN'T cause a gas station to go boom. Not only that, but even when you are NOT on a call, it is still communicating with the tower.

As far as "topping off" goes, the reason is to make nice round numbers, like 65.00. This is much easier to type into your accounting software than 64.79.

Its not easy to fill it in a way where fuel will pour into the canister. Take a look inside the filler port, there is a hole at the TOP of it, that connects to a hose UP. You would literally have to fill the gas until it is a few inches above the filler port before it made it over.

I think that those people who report that topping off kills their charcoal canisters just COINCIDENTALLY happened to top off at that point. Or maybe their dealer is trying to place blame.

I was making a long drive yesterday from where gas is a bunch cheaper than home. The pump clicked off at $20.XX, and I stopped at $26. Gas was $2.26 a gallon. You do the math.....

On a related note, when I was visiting family in rural Missouri a couple years ago, I was filling up at the pump and the guy next to me was filling up his old lifted F-150. After he got the pump in, he stood next to it and lit up a cigarette...acting like it was nothing. I mean...I get that the whole static electricity from your cell phone thing is highly unlikely and a little ridiculous in a way, but lighting a freaking cigarette right next to the pump while you're filling up? Jesus h christ...rednecks.

LOL that's exactly why I always used to top off my cars when filling up. I always felt compelled to hit a number divisible by 10 or 5, sounds stupid but it was OCD I guess.

Ever since getting my 2004 Tacoma though I've read that especially with these older trucks, it's not good to top off and can end up costing you in repairs. I weaned myself off of the habit and don't do it anymore lol.

The government doesn't care how many gallons you bought, just how many dollars you spend. That means that you need to be able to type in the DOLLAR value. So out of sheer LAZYNESS, get the dollar value to read .00.

I like to top off to a specific dollar amount so if anyone ever steals my credit card info I can tell at a glance that I didn't make a gas purchase with a random dollar amount. ;)
