I have seen those setups, where it is tied into the main panel and kicks in automatically, that would be the best to have but I would have to sell the truck to get one.

 

Having 4 tractors on hand solves that problem!

 

I have a little 2300 watt gen that I would run furnace, fridge, and a light or two. It is loud but served mt well for 3 days during an ice storm also. Neighbors were going to motels. I was comfortable. Would run for 3 hours. So I would full it just before I went to work. Shoot home at noon, fill it, and take off. So I was without power for like 4 hours a day. Was a non issue. Did the job and I slept in my own bed.
I have a 7500 watt gen now and whole house setup. Hope I never use it but it's there.

Oh yea. It was not cheap at all. But up around here barter works great for labor. He does excavating etc so it was not to bad...

We have scout meetings in the park during the summer. Had to tell the boys no pokemon go during the meeting. The park was filled with people with phones in their faces. Kids and adults.

 

I have three of these manual switches. Works great.


Nothing automatic about it. but my generators are pull start anyway. They start first or second pull all the time. The cool thing about my setup is that I can take the little Honda's anywhere.

Yeah this is more the setup I would like to have, with solar.

 

I priced out the whole house gennys with transfer switch. ~$8-10 K including labor and permits.
PLUS, the town was gonna bump up my friggin property tax. That took me over the edge and made me go my route. I'm happy I did.
