Mine has a lockout so I shut the main then switch on the gen breaker. Plug in the gen outside and fire it off. That's a lot of wiring.... I have one 3 strand cable into my box. That's it...

I have a similar setup with a sub panel and 3 way breakers. Generator is in the shed and gets wheeled out when needed.
Works fine, but unfortunately ,when power goes out for days, I'm usually working 16 hour days and nobody is here to maintain the generator..
Didn't lose power from Sandy, but lost it for 5 days from Irene in 2011. I managed to save most of my game meat when a friend who didn't lose power put it in his freezer.

    Good morning.

Where I work we have over 200 Honda generators to use in case of power outages, very reliable units, have yet to see one fail us. We used to use Onan, they were constantly needing repairs.

    Good Morning everyone !!!

All this talk about generators reminds me of the fun time in 1996 when there was a huge cascading power failure from BC Canada all the way to Mexico and as far east as New Mexico . That was the longest power failure I've ever been in , think it was a couple day

So apparently this is a black swallowtail (thanks Google) and is the state butterfly of Oklahoma and New Jersey! Who knew OK and NJ had anything in common other than we both speak variants of the english language. I suspected you guys were dying to know all this useless crap. Maybe it will win you some $ on a game show someday.

We get windstorms here, highest gusts are usually around 50 mph, can't even imagine what a hurricane would be like.

When Hurricane Ike hit a few years ago, it swung all the way north and through Kentucky. We had 8 hours of sustained wind in excess of 75 mph. One gust (at the airport) registered @ 95mph. I was outside, splitting firewood. When the wind blew a chunk of wood I'd guess to be 150lbs off the splitter, I gave it up and went inside. Next day I had a whole hell of a lot MORE wood to split. We had trees down everywhere. Our lights flickered a couple times but never went out. Power was out for 5 days at work.

Same here we get strong winds " Santa Ana winds" from late September thru late March . My area it's not uncommon to see 60-70 mph gusts with 35 - 45mph sustained . The bldgs where I live are constantly having roof repairs from wind damage and the trees have a natural lean from the North / NW

I flew out of West Palm Beach the day before Hurricane Andrew hit. It was just coincidence that I was leaving that day after vacationing for 2 weeks. From altitude you could see the hurricane approaching and the cloud formations. Spectacular thing to see, not so much for the people facing it. It's something I'll never forget.

When it comes to vacationing, I've had my share of luck (if you want to call it that, horrific for the people facing my "luck") , but anyway we were on a family vacation at Disneyland and flew home one Monday night, September 10, 2001

Edit: Apologies, had the day wrong. But we did fly the night before.
