image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg i previously built a 2005 Tacoma. It was a TRD Off Road that had the 8" rear end with locking diff. I broke the ring and pinion on the truck and wound up swapping the 8" for a Ford 9" and added ARB lockers front and rear. I am REALLY liking these 2016's and have been tossing around the idea of building another Taco. I am currently in a 2006 Power Wagon.

My question is, do the 2016 TRD Off Road models still use the 8" rear end and the Sport Models have the 8.4" rear end, or has Toyota beefed up the rear end on the TRD Off Road

2016 Tacoma trucks will be fitted with one of two rear drum-braked axles depending on configuration. The BD20 axle has an 8-inch ring gear and we’re told this axle is basically carryover from the previous truck, but it does have some changes including a new gearset.

There’s also a brand-new rear axle with 8.75-inch ring gear and high-strength axletubes. The BD22A is the “normal” 8.75-inch axle and the BD22AN 8.75-inch axle is fitted with an electric rear locker. The BD22AN will be included in TRD Off-Road package-equipped trucks. These new 8.75-inch axles contribute to a gross axle weight rating improvement of 24 percent. It’s also worth noting that the electronic rear diff locker now has an internally-mounted drive motor as opposed to the external motor found on the previous Tacoma. Up front, the centersection and axleshafts are carryover from the previous-gen truck. All of the hubs are stronger and of a new design due to new wheel slippage sensors.

Thanks Paul631. Exactly what I was looking for. So, sounds like TRD Off Road has 8.75" ring gear and locker. Awesome stuff.

    Mostly stuff I built.
The manual transmission TRD trucks get 4.30:1 gearing and the auto transmission trucks get 3.91:1 gearing. The locker is also electro magnetically applied in the '16 instead of mechanically like in the older version. Built basically like an Eaton electric locker. Just to add to the information above.

The "new" locker and the 8.75" diff have been in use in the Hilux in the overseas markets for several years now. So it is a proven axle just look around some Hilux forums.

This is an explosion of a similar model to the one the 2016 gets built by a division of Eatonimage.jpg

Only the TRD OR trucks and manual transmission trucks got the 8.75".

I have a TRD Sport with manual - so I have the 8.75 without the locker.... right?

I absolutely loved that truck and miss it tremendously. I took it on a trip from San Diego to Panama and back, with 6 weeks in Mexico and 6 weeks in Central America. It was extremely well built and I should have never parted with it. I tried to locate the person I sold it to so I could attempt to buy it back, but was unsuccessful (I sold it when the economy crashed and I went through tough financial times).

Some of the specs: 2005 TRD Offroad with Donahoe Racing (now Ikon Vehicle Dynaimcs) 2.5" coil over lift, DR billet upper A-arms, custom rear leaf pack to accommodate weight, light racing hydraulic bump stops at all 4 corners, All Pro Offroad full skids, Ford 9" rear end with ARB lockers front and rear. ARB front bumper with Warn 9k winch. Custom made rear bumper with swing out carrier (nobody made a swing out for Tacos when I built this bumper with my brother). Custom made rear bed rack (my brother and I built) with gas cans and Adventure Trailer gas can holders, Lowrance GPS, custom security safe mounted behind rear seats (for my travels through Mexico and Central America, for passports, currency, etc.). I am sure there is a lot I am missing, but that is the bulk of the build.

I have never felt a truck was more a part of me than this one. I have a desire to build another Taco, but not sure I want to undertake the process and cost. My current truck is an 06 Dodge Power Wagon with 65k original miles sitting on a Carli lift with 37" tires. I hardly drive the truck as I now have a company vehicle....I pretty much use it for hunting and camping.

I gotta say the Tacoma itch is growing and I may need to scratch it.

Taco-itis, kinda catchy I say go for it - get the manual.. might as well go TRD Sport use money saved over the TRD-OR and buy stuff.
