I'm trying to find a dash cam that uses the existing go pro mount in the truck. I've searched the forum with no luck. I have a action "go pro" style camera, but I would like an actual dash cam for loop recording.

Does anyone have anything good? There are tons on Amazon but none that look like they could use the mount in the truck. Help would be great....

    Thanks in advance.

I'm not saying do't do it, but be aware that using the GoPro mount for anything on public roads may be illegal.

As crazy at it may sound, Tacoma put the mount in an area of the windshield that many (probably most) states do not allow to be used for mounting anything. The idea behind the laws is that things mounted in that area could obstruct vision. Typically there are limited areas of the windshield on which items may be mounted, and then only certain types of items may be mounted. The top, center of the windshield (behind the rear view mirror) and lower left and lower right corners of the windshield are the most likely to be legal mounting areas. Here is a link to a site that has some info on GPS mounting, and those laws generally address other electronic devices: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34521

I guess Toyota put the GoPro mount where they did so the selfie-obsessed crowd could shoot videos of them and their passengers squealing while bashing around offroad, and not with any thought of actual utility.

But, I have seen mounts that can be bought separately and which will work with the GoPro mount and many dash cams.

I have a gopro Hero 3 on my mount, it does looping and the quality at 1080p is outstanding compared to some of the other cams on Amazon that other people I know have tried.

As far as being legal, I use mine all the time ... because of the insane traffic in the dfw area in Texas.

I think if you mount it in any place other than the mount there may be problems.

It would be pretty simple to adapt the mount for this camera to utilize the go pro mount. Mounting it way over there though would make it hard to lock any interesting clips you obtained.

I mounted mine behind the mirror and ran power to it from the under dash fuse block. You can see that thread in my profile history. I used double sided gorilla mounting tape.

I am afraid with this Texas heat that double sided tape would eventually fail. That's why I'm looking for a mount that will fit the GoPro clip on the windshield.

Texan here... I mounted my dashcam (that same Rexing pictured above) with 3M VHB tape after the OEM tape it came with failed. It hasn't budged an inch since then.

I bought this Go pro knock off, made by Andoer http://www.ebay.com/itm/351780419002
Great images for $43 + SD card
Then I tapped the power leads for the rear view mirror for a sweet installation.

I may have misplaced the part that connects the GoPro to the windshield mount. Did that come with the truck or did it come with the GoPro? Or is it something i have to spend more money on to get?

I must have lost mine somewhere along the way. Do you happen to have a picture or link to the part that I am looking for? I have searched but they have more gadgets for GoPro's in my results than I know what to do with.

Thanks for the help by the way.

I use my go pro sessions it's small and actually hides behind the rear view mirror...not actually behind it but the review mirror blocks it out enough where I forget it's there

Here is picture of the power connection to the rear view mirror. you can see the red and yellow wires that were tapped into the power leads from the mirror. The 12 to 5 volt adapter is tapped up. The adapter is a lighter plug to usb and I took it apart so it is smaller and soldered the 12v wires to it. Then just plug a short USB cable into it to the camera.
