Long story short (er). I left my Tacoma key remote start key and tailgate key on top of my bed cover and drove 7 miles to work. It was completely my fault for taking the key out of the truck, putting it on the bed cover and forgetting it when I drove off. It was actually very stupid of me. But I am disappointed with Toyota that it did not alarm me that the key was not in the truck.

My fiancé brought me the backup remote start key but now I cannot unlock my tailgate. I was wondering if anyone knows a place I can get a new oem quality key for remote start and tailgate key for cheaper then ordering from the dealer?

There should have been two small tags on the keyring when you got your keys at delivery. One of those will be for the tailgate...can't a locksmith use the number to cut a new key for you?

I always thought the dealer recorded your key numbers and kept in a file. They should be able to cut you a new tailgate key, that is if you do not have the key tags with the key codes on them.

I feel your pain, I lost my 2016 FOB and Tailgate key at the Motocross track and the dealer wants over $500 to replace them. The truck did not warn me that the FOB was not in the car I drove 68 miles home before realizing that the fob is gone along with my hopes of ever finding it again. It is my fault for the loss but I am so pissed off. I hate the push button start I seriously want to get rid of the truck and buy a truck with an old school ignition. Really disappointed in myself and the lack of warning.

P.S. I took my spare key while driving down the road and threw it out the window to simulate it falling off the roof or bed cover and the truck DID NOT chime, say "Key Not Detected" it just kept driving like nothing was wrong until I stopped and shut it off only to find out (but I already knew) that they key is no longer detected trying to restart the vehicle. Accidents happen but this is really a shitty thing.

Interesting. My truck will beep at me if the key is removed from the truck while it is running. However that is only when in park, I have no idea what happens while in drive or moving.

It will not beep or chime or warn you if you leave the keys on the roof or on a bed cover or on the hood, anywhere they could be close enough to fool the system and then fall off. I did it 3 times last night cause I am going INSANE over this F-ing key. They dealer wants over $500 to replace, reprogram and re-cut a tailgate key. I am so pissed off at myself and this truck.

That's crazy because my key wont let me even start the truck if im not sitting in the seat... like I try to start the truck in the am by leaning in and pushing the brakes with my hand and pushing the button..... nope.

I literally lean in the truck left hand on the brake pedal and push the button to start my truck all the time without having any weight in the seat.

I may actually make a short video about this and post it up here.

I have a D-Ring clip on my keys and they are always clipped to me however, I was riding my stunt bike in a lot and I am not going to keep the keys on me incase I fall off the bike and crush the remote or have it crush my hip bone. Its on me for the loss but the Truck doesn't warn you and it should even if you throw the key out of the window... I have a short iphone clip uploading right now to be posted asap.

Try keep the key in your right pocket so when you lean inside the cabin it will read it as being inside.
