I have had a loud whine after my truck gets warm. I had this happen, and my serpentine belt busted, because of a worn out pulley. After that happened, I had to have the shop fix it, and I said that there are 3 bad pulleys. I felt around and felt 3 pulleys wobbling. The mechanic said that only the one was bad. After I had that one replaced, the whine was gone for a few hours, and then back again.

I thought maybe it was the transmission letting me know I need a flush, but if I rev in neutral, the whine is there.

I am going to have a mechanic find the exact area that the whine is coming from, but I would like to see if I could get some opinions here first. My truck is a 2006 Tacoma sr5 V6 4.0L manual.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Keep changing out the pulleys until the whine is gone; that's what I did. Check your new belt for signs of abrasion. My belt still looks like new after 1k, thank God. Good luck; you'll figure it out.

The luck is needed! I've had this truck for 4 months, and love it, but hate it at the same time. Almost seems like a lemon. But I will most definitely do that! Thanks a lot

Whine under the hood? I have seen guys prank each other by putting various stinky or noisy things under a hood. Check to see if somebody put the 3rd Gen Forum under there.

They started making noise around 90k miles; truck has 129,000, now. You should have changed the $30 tensioner pulley BEFORE it exploded and you had to buy the whole $100 tensioner; you learned something and that's a good thing.

When the truck is idling with the headlights on and you rev the engine do the headlights "flare' or get brighter? That could be a sign of the alternator going south.

The whine does not go away when you push the clutch down does it?

Hmmm. I'm not exactly sure. I will have a look at that tonight. Would that create the whine though? And even if my lights do that, couldn't that still be because the serpentine belt isn't spinning as easily as it should be?

actually it was an idler pulley. The pulley was $90 CAD, but also a belt. Still taught me something.

So they didn't change out the BELT TENSIONER pulley? I'd change it to save a bigger headache possibly sooner rather than later. They did an idler, that's good but keep an eye on the belt for abrasion.

That's what I said as well. But they claimed it would be a wast of money and time because the rest are perfectly fine. Must have been very lazy

I was willing to have them change all 3 idle pulleys and the tensioner pulley. Especially while they were already in there. As soon as I heard that whine coming back, I was angered greatly.

This is why you learn to do it yourself. It's a real heart pounder when you've disabled your own truck but take a breath and you can do it (if I can do it, you can do it.... trust me)

I can do some things myself, but when I break down 3.5 hours from where I am supposed to be, I can't really help it. But I know that if I get a local mechanic to do it, it will be different. They knew I was from out of town. I enjoy (sometimes) working on my vehicle, but I don't have the time, or the space to do it anymore.

I know the feeling. Talk to your local Fire Chief and find out who he uses for auto repair.

Yeah, moving across country is hard. But I will eventually have all of the things necessary again! Then, I don't have to get ripped off anymore

If it happens as soon as you depress the clutch then you may have a throw out bearing issue related to the manual transmission. How many miles do you have on this Beast?
