Slow returning clutch pedal

Hi all, I have an 05 Taco TRD Sport with 105,000 miles on her. 6 speed manual trans. Problem is on very cold mornings or for the first 20 mins or so when first driven on cold days the clutch pedal feels as though its sticking a bit. When pushed in its a bit slow to return and will pop back and hit the bottom of my foot a moment after letting it out. It seems to do this until the cab is up to a warm room temp. Flush the hyd fluid? New slave needed? Anyone else heard of this? My local Toyota deadler claim hes never heard this one before. This is my 1st winter with this truck so I dont know if it did it last year.

 

Most of our 2nd Gens do this. Let the truck warm up for 5-10 mins (depending on how cold) and it should be fine. Happens to my truck when the temperature gets near or below 0 degrees F

 

Mine is a bit slow to return as well. It's not a big deal for me though. Seems to return to normal fairly quickly, and hasn't been a problem for me yet while driving.

 

yes i to have this problem.it is not ok to me toyota said the same thing to me.if the clutch pedal is not returning the the clutch is slipping.i also get rough clutch engagement on rainy days.the whole clutch system is junk if you ask me.a plastic clutch master really how cheap is that.sorry for the brief rant but i'm really pissed about this i only have 10k on mine.

 

I have a 2005 4WD SR5 5 speed and does the exact same thing but year round. It doesn't return slow but the last ~20% of return travel...sticks and pops back several seconds later or if I tap it with my foot. I brought it to a dealer and they lubricated the linkages but the next day, it happened again. I know the last 20% is not clutch engagement so I'm not wearing out the clutch. There's a TSB about some sort of pedal squeeking but I exceeded the warranty to look into this. Not sure if the same. Looking underneath, I noted some sort of coil return spring(s) and thought about diagnosing around there first but never did and just lived with it discouraged.

 

mine did that too when we were down to like 10 degrees outside.

 

We don't get the coldest days here in AZ but mine does this a little when the morning temps get in the low 40's. After about 5 minutes of driving it is fine. If it was colder I'm sure the symptoms would last longer. It is definately annoying.

 

So this is something that I have to "live with"? That blows. My 98 Taco was bullet proof. Had it 11 years. I have owned this one since 5/09 and I really dont think its on the same level of quality as the old one. But its super sweet looking and very luxourios campared to the old one but I doubt I will get 5 more years out of it. Yes it has 105k miles but so what. Also, the engine ticks super looud at idle. It goes away completly at 1500rpm. ... Im guesing its just valve train noise that dissapeers when oil pump starts pumping faster.

 

Mine is a little slow to return when its below 10F or so. I usually pump it a few times to loosen it up before I start, only idle for about a minute before I drive. Stiff for a couple minutes, but once heat is going its fine.

Got me thinking maybe I'll try a thinner lube on the piston shaft...

The tick is normal w/ this motor.

 

My 09 clutch will be firmer to press for a while on really cold days. It returns just fine though. No sticking or popping back. The firmness in pressing it goes away fairly quickly.

 

Yeah, I should have pointed out in my post that it doesn't actually stick and then pop back like some have said. It's just a little more firm going in, and it does feel the slightest bit sluggish coming back out, but it does return all the way.

 

I have also noticed the clutch chatter only on rainy days or when its really humid.

I think everyone's does the same thing. I have the same problem in the cold. and the pedal sqeaks/creaks when its hot outside in the spring and summer. I still don't understand why they decided a plastic pedal arm would be a good idea.

 

Mine is sticking all the time. Right after the clutch lets out, it sticks and pops. I took it to Toyota in '08 and they did the "Squeaky clutch" TSB and it worked right for a few months. I've been living with it for a while, but it's gotten a lot worse lately. I'm out of warranty on the truck, and out of the 1 year part warranty, but I'm gonna try to get Toyota to do somethin about it anyway. In my opinion, Toyota should do something about it considering I haven't even put 12K on it since they worked on it the first time. It's a little ridiculous. I've already called the dealer (Cherokee Toyota) and they said if they did anything I, of course, would have to pay for it to be done. But to be honest I find it unacceptable. You can call me a prick or a bad customer, but I'm going to call Corporate and see if there's anything that can be done about it. I figured with all the bad press they've been getting lately they might do whatever it takes to make current Toyota owners happy considering there might not be as many future Toyota owners with all the problems they've had recently.

 

Lemme know what they say about it...the problem is the part though. They are just going to put the same part on it again and its gonna happen all over again in the future. I hope they fired the idiot who thought it would be a good idea to put a plastic pedal arm in the truck. I live 3 miles from Cherokee county toyota right up hwy 5. I was impressed that Cherokee county Toyota collision center fixed my truck in 2 days when I hit that deer back in November. I haven't dealt with the service center.

I don't typically deal with dealerships since I do all of my work myself.

 

Well when I took it in the first time I was still under warranty, so I figured why not get them to do it for free? I called up there and talked to them again and talked to Eric and he said they'd look at it for free and diagnose the problem, but even if it's the same problem as last time I'd still have to pay to have it fixed. I was on hold for an hour with Corporate earlier and never got anyone. I'll try callin back this evenin after work. I'm takin it to a local mechanic in the mornin to see what he thinks cuz it's really pissin me off.

 

The slow clutch return was a problem on pre 2001 F-Bodies (camaro, firebird) during hard driving or when the fluid gets warm. If remember, the problem was there wasn't enough fluid flowing through the slave and the solution was upgrade the slave or drill the holes bigger. Maybe it's the same for our trucks with the cold fluid. Try DOT 4 instead of 3? I haven't seen the slave yet but drilling the hole bigger to allow more fluid movement could be a solution.

 

Mine does the same thing. I pump the clutch in and out a few times while it is in neutral to loosen it up a bit. It is also important to let the truck warm up for awhile when it is really cold out. My clutch pedal is ok once it gets up to operating temperature.

 

OK so after bein on hold for 2 hours with Corporate, I finally got to talk to someone. She said she is going to call Cherokee Toyota and "see what they can do" for me. I don't know what that means. I expect to have to take it down next week to get it looked at and let them make sure it's the same problem that it was last time. I took it to my local mechanic today and he said it needed the TSB (Clevis sub assembly, pedal sub assembly, 2 bushings), and I told him I had it done already. So next week I'll take it down and let them look at it, and if they still refuse to do anything about it I'll make another call to Toyota and make another complaint. I'll keep you guys updated about what happens.

 

Alright guys, update time. Like I said I've already had the TSB done on the clutch and it's stickin again. Well, I took it back to the dealership that did the TSB (Cherokee Toyota) and they looked at it for me. First, the guy told me they would look at it for me for free. So they call and tell me I need a new pedal assembly and bushings and it'll be $500 to fix. When I go back to pick it up I ask what the difference is between the TSB and what they're doin this time and he said it was replacing the pedal because it's chewing up the bushings. I told him I've already had the pedal and the bushings replaced and he actually has the nerve to tell me I was wrong and it hasn't been replaced before. He starts looking through his records and says it's not there. So i tell him it was in June of '08 and he looks and all it says is "Interior Trim". So I told him to click on it and click on details. He does, and what does it say? "Replaced pedal and bushings." He changed his tone real quick. I asked him why I need to get it replaced AGAIN after only 20 or 25 K miles and he said he'd look into it. Then he tells me that they have 30 mins invested in the truck and I owe the cashier. I told him Eric told me it would be free and he says "That's not always the case. We looked at it, but then we had to diagnose it too." I said "Eric said you'd look at it for free, so what are you gonna do, just look at it and say oh yea you have a problem? No. You had to diagnose it too. I'm not paying" So apparently Eric wasn't there and didn't tell anyone what was goin on. He tried to tell me I had to pay, and I, somewhat politely told him I wasn't giving him a dime. So I dind't pay, and then get a call a few minutes ago saying they're going to replace it for me AGAIN...for free. So I take it in Thursday. Sorry for the long story there...had to rant a little.
