leveling 2016 with bilstein adjustable 5100

How high do you want to go? I went 887s and it gave me over 2inches.

 

1" front but want to maintain rake.

 

Question....
I am adding the 5100's to the front, to level out my TRD OR (probably going to set to .85 as most suggest to level). I don't really want to add anything to the rear except to change out the shocks as well; my goal being just to get the front end up a bit, so when I get new tires/wheels, there wont be any rubbing concerns (I have mud guards).

So all that being said, I was going to get the 5100's for the rear as well (yes, I know they don't add any height... like I said, I'm looking to just more or less level, not raise the whole truck), but now I'm thinking about maybe getting the Bilstein 5160's for the rear, as the 5100's are essentially the same shock I have now on the rear (4600's).

Would there be any benefit to adding the 5160's to the rear? Would that be weird, having 5100's in the front, and 5160's on the rear? Would it make for a better/smoother ride? Haven't really seen this combo mentioned anywhere, so any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

 

The front and rear 5100s have the same exact valving as your stock TRD OR Bilstein 4600. So don't get those for the rear. I would recommend the 5160s for the rear if you can afford it. They are pretty a nice ride from what I've read. I've thought about switching to 5160s for my trucks rear, but I want more travel so I will end up going the B110 (extended versions of 5100s).

Bilstein 5100s at .85" lift for the front. The rear is still stock. I will get the alignment in the near future. As far as the ride goes, it seems smoother than o.e.m. Bilsteins.

 

Looks great, I wouldn't hold off long without the alignment. By the way, leave the rear stock as far as shocks go. The 4600 bilstiens you have stock are the same valving as the 5100s.

after reading this thread and the other massive 135+ pages on lifting my head hurts on the number of possible ways to lift.

2016 Stock TRD Sport on oem tires.

1. I've decided to NOT do any spacers either body or suspension/shocks.

2. I am looking for a mild no mod lift.

this is what I am thinking from reading the past few days.

5100 adjustable in the front at .85 setting
5100 adjustable in the rear at .85 setting

is this advisable or should I go with the non adjustable 5100 for the rears?

would moving up to the 1.75 setting front and .85 rear be ok in the future or should I look more into a more safer setup long term with a full kit from toytec (boss kit ~$1300)

 

The rear 5100 shocks are not ride height adjustable. They do come in 3 different lengths, depending on how high your lift is... but with just .85 in the front, you would just need the standard length shock for the rear (0" - 1" = part #

ok just wondering since someone else posted about having the rears set at .85 also.

so in the future if I went with 1.75 setting in the front would I have to replace the rears with a different set of shocks that are longer or would the rear 5100 be enough or would I have to a different mod to get the rear to match the front setting of 1.75.

I'm sure that 0311Kill will chime in with more accurate info., but from my limited understanding (mind you I just got me Tacoma last week), if you go up to 1.75 in the front, the front end will then sit higher than the rear, and you'll need to add a AAL (Add A Leaf) to the rear, or a spacer to level the rear end out with the higher front.... at this point, I just kind of threw my hands up in the air, and was like I'm see/sawing the thing back and fourth, adding parts here, adding parts there... I might as well just get a $1500 suspension lift.

So, I've just decided to keep it simple... add the ride height adjustable 5100's to the front (set to .85"), and then since I have a TRD Off Road, and the current rear stock shocks (Bilstein 4600) are essentially the same thing as the rear 5100's, I choose to do the Bilstein 5160 shocks to the rear, with the additional reservoir; so at lease I'm not paying $ to put the same shock on the rear that just a different color and comes with a boot. Yes, the 5160's are more $$$ than the rear 5100's (effectively $100 more a piece), but at least I'm "hypothetically" getting a better shock, and it's not costing me as much as a full blown suspension lift would.... mind you, I just want to level out the front end to make room for some BFGs in the future.... So long story short, it just really depends what your end goal is, as to what you need to have/order/install.

 

greatly appreciate the feedback. that little tidbit helped in my thought process of trying to understand this convoluted process of doing a minor lift.

I am looking at doing the .85 for now in the front and replacing the sport shocks with 5100 non adjustable (I know the Off road oem shocks are the same as the 5100's but not sure on the sport oem shocks). the only issue I see that if the .85 setting in the front isn't enough what would I have to do to get the rear squared with setting the fronts to 1.75?

from what I have read, doing any type of spacer/block is never recommended.

 

The TRD sports are Hitachi shocks (blue). So having 5100s all around ain't a bad idea. If you set the front at 1.75 I would recommend getting an add a leaf- with the overload leaf removed.

 

Don't expect your alignment to come out 100% at 1.75

If you really want it to be just like factory I would keep it at .85

also note : the 1.75 setting for the 2016 is like the 2.5 setting on the 2015 setups from what I have read.
