I do not top off because I track my MPGs and topping off will more than likely skew the results.
I also think it tends to cause you to over pay for your gas, although I have no proof of that. I just think it's another place for error.

I pulled into a gas station yesterday to fill up. There was a tanker truck there, filling the underground tanks. The driver looked to be a fellow "50-something"......His teen age/early 20's girlfriend was walking around next to where he was standing next to the tank manifold (on the truck) while smoking a cigarette. You could see gas vapor in the air very near where she was at. Her and the driver swapped spit a while, then she went into the station....still smoking. I shut off my pump with my tank about half full and got the hell outta there.

Won't skew any results, because the extra fuel you top off into it will be recorded by the pump.

But I feel that the opposite occurs. When the pump stops a little void of air is created in the pump. When you attempt to pump more gas in there is a lag befor more gas comes out. Thus I feel the pump actually records MORE gas and thus a greater cost than what is actually going into the vehicle.

This is just my fear. Again no proof or science to back it up by why I tend to not top off my tanks.

No air will ever make it into the pump. It can't. Gas pumps are gear pumps with multiple check valves. And while gravity may drain the filler hose and allow air in there, remember that the meter is still before the hose.

Also keep in mind that the hose emptied out also for the previous car to use the pump, so it actually balances out.

Funny. Been driving for 40 years, topping off to this next dollar. Never once had to replace a charcoal canister. Now leaded gas was fuel, baby.
