IRVINE – A pick-up truck was flipped early Sunday morning after the driver did doughnuts in the grass at Flagstone Park, authorities said.
Police have not identified the occupants of the Toyota Tacoma, who left the scene before officers arrived. The vehicle's owner told authorities that the truck had been stolen, after he claimed to have left the car unlocked, with the key inside.

Officers responded to the park, which is at 21 Flagstone, shortly before 2 a.m., Irvine police Lt. John Hare said. The vehicle was found upside down, with witnesses reporting that two men were seen running from the area.
The preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle had been traveling through the park, and had flipped after making a "series of curving turning movements," Hare said.

Officers were unable to locate the occupants, Hare said, with investigators delivering a message to the registered owners San Clemente address.

Several hours later, the vehicle's owner contacted police to report that his car had been stolen the night before. The owner said he had parked his vehicle at 9:30 p.m. Saturday night on Flagstone, where he said he now lives, and believed he had left his keys in the truck, and the doors unlocked, Hare said.

Ok, dillweed.... First, you do doughnuts (reckless driving) in the park (trespassing), then you flip your vehicle and leave the scene (leaving the scene of an accident), THEN several hours later you report your truck as "stolen with the keys in the ignition and the doors unlocked" (making a false report)... Hmmm... This story is suspect and your pride got in the way. Man up to the situation.

Hey it could happen. I've accidentally left my keys in my truck with the doors unlocked overnight before. Did it while unloading my truck after a camping trip.

Possible? Yes, but probably not what really happened..

It it were really stolen, they probably would not have taken it to the park to do donuts; it would have been on it's way to Mexico, or to a chop shop..

My wifes SUV was stolen after she went back in to the house for her purse. The people who stole it cleaned it up and drove it around for a few days like it was their own car. When we get the SUV back it has kids toys, window, air freshener and other personal items in it. Its possible that what he is saying is true.

typically cars arent reported stolen AFTER theyre found unless something else happened

I'm not saying cops should run out to his house now and arrest him...however he will need to be questioned because the story and actual events make for an odd coincidence
