So I get the maint light on my 2016 Tacoma DB SR last week and I schedule the appointment with my service guy at Toyota. I remember when I first bought this truck I found it odd when he told me that one of two engines in the Toyota line up had 5K oil change intervals...including the 2TR-FE. All the other engines were getting 10K oil changes... the kick in the balls was when he said that the 2TR-FE only takes synthetic... now I can understand 5K oil changes but synthetic is suppose to last longer. It didn't make sense to me so I looked this up did some research and confirmed he was correct... NOW he is saying that the 2TR-FE is 10K on the oil changes.... when did this change happen? So I would love a definite answer on this... not that I am complaining but I don't want to do anything to mess up my engine... and I am hearing conflicting information... does anyone know?

It's 10K miles for oil/filter change since Toyota went to a 0W20 Synthetic oil in the engines UNLESS you drive in harsh conditions. 5K is mostly inspections with a tire rotation. Did they not include a service manual with your truck?

While I haven't read the 2016 manual, I can state that this is not precisely correct. The 2TR-FE up to AT LEAST MY2015, was 5000 mile OCI, even on synthetic 0w20. There are some differences in the 2TR-FE for 2016, so they may have deemed it appropriate to go with higher OCI now.

Regardless of that, however, I run 10,000 KM OCI (6250 miles). Its a bit longer than the book suggests, but (a) not much more, and (b) easier to monitor, since my odometer is in km, just do the oil every time it turns a 10k.

His is a Gen 3 2016, 10K between oil changes. Yours is a 2015, 5K between oil changes. Sticker on my window and in my manual, although a 3.5, says 16,000km next service.

Anyway, I'll never go that distance before it's due date, probably closer to 10,000Km before I need to get it serviced.

Read what I replied to. He was talking about the correlation between it switching to synthetic, and increased OCI, which is simply not the case for the 2TR-FE. The switch to synthetic was back in around 2008 or 2009-ish, and IF the OCI has been increased (I'm trying to find it in the owners manual right now), then that would be new for 2016, or to put it another way, roughly EIGHT YEARS after the switch to synthetic.

Also, mine is not a 2015. I've had it a few years longer than that. "MY2015" doesn't mean "mine", it means "Model Year".

Is OCI even in the owner's manual?
Page 104 is awesome. Panic mode apparently electrocutes burglars who are trying to break into your truck.

You're right. The 2TR-FE was using synthetic. For whatever reason Toyota changed the interval to a longer one, for his engine it's 10K.

Go to Toyota's website and look in their maintenance menus. It's in the "Service your vehicle" section under "For Owners".

Apparently, they put it in the *warranty* book. Interesting the way they word it though, "For VEHICLES CERTIFIED FOR 0W20 motor oil, the oil change interval is 10,000 miles or 12 months" -- this statement appears to retroactively allow 10,000 mile OCI on ALL 2TR-FE.... which actually makes sense. From what I can tell, the only changes made to the engine between MY2015 and MY2016 is the VVT they added to the exhaust cam shaft, which provides the modest 4-5 hp increase. This alone shouldn't impact lubrication requirements.

**Nevermind, the below info in this post is outdated**

According to Toyota, the 4-cylinder unfortunately does not have a 10k interval...

*The 2TR-FE (4Runner / Tacoma) and the 3UR-FBE (Flex Fuel Tundra / Sequoia) are the exceptions to this new change interval program; these engines have not been approved for the 10,000 mile interval at this time. A 5,000-mile/6-month oil change interval is still required for these vehicles. Also, the Flex Fuel 3UR-FBE requires a 2,500 mile interval when operated on E85.

    I think That's old , the 4Runner has not had a 4cyl option since 2011. 2016 models get ,10k service now
