the best cold air intake is the stock one you have, just cut off the 90 inside the fender so it can breathe better and not have to suck air though the fender duct and leave everything else as-is

or waste money buying something that will not work as well and just suck up hot air from under the hood reducing your performance

I bought this when I first got the truck. Most say you won't see much gain and some have even tested on the dyno to prove their theory correct. One guy with a s/c even gained 10 more HP by putting his stock back on. I wish I did more research. I would have went with the black plastic one because the steel is radiating a lot of engine bay heat. I most likely will sell it once I get a s/c and headers but for now it just looks pretty and does have somewhat of a cool sound to it when you floor it.

My stock intake was pretty cracked up so i just bought an aftermarket. After dealing with how much more exposed the filter is i ended up piecing this together. theres been couple dynos done that shown that cais loose hp and a couple that gained a little on this motor. Il just stick with stock airbox.

"Looking pretty" sure is accurate, how do you keep that engine bay looking so clean? Looks like mine did after it was detailed earlier this year, but a few off-roading trips has it looking it's age again. I guess I answered my own question, lol.

First, I hit it with a couple cans of engine degreaser. The kind you get at any auto supply store. Then I sprayed it down with a garden hose and finished off with a black interior vinyl detail spray, Meguire's or something like that. Took me about an hour....she'd look a lot nicer with a brand new Magnuson S.C. In there!

She sure would! I can attest to that much ;)

Thanks for the tips, I'll have to give mine that treatment this weekend

^^^^This. It's called the "elbow mod" and I did it on mine. For those that do not know, there's a snorkel inside the passenger front fender above the wheel well that goes from your air filter box backwards to just under the radio antenna-this is designed this way so you can "ford streams" or floods whatever. I cut that snorkel out and just left the first 2" like this

and when I remounted it back into the fender at airbox, I spun it around so the intake opening faces forward to grab fresh air. To me this is the better cold air intake because it's totally devoid of hot engine air unlike the deckplate mod.
Here's a shot of it before I re-installed the airbox with the intake opening looking toward the front bumper

I just did a "straight as I could" cut behind the flange just inside the filter so the majority of the entire 90 is no longer there on mine so its confined turn opening doesn't choke off airflow.

also with this mod, the fender allows full free airflow but is enclosed and protected enough so that there is no mud or whatever you have to worry about splashing up under the hood like you do with the deck plate mod that makes you need to block off the deck plate hole to go off roading with that mod

How much more surface area is there with the stock v6 Air filter over the Stock 2.7 Air filter? on URD for the aFe air filter it states 11x14 for the v6. Looking to see if upgrade to stock v6 air box would be good for the 2.7

sorry no pics but a busted bracket AEM Brute force fixed with zip ties looped around the air tube then looped through and around the base screw.

with an over sized KN filter, yeah it was waste but she sucks well, paired with a maxbore 2mm Throttle body clean up job

Glad this thread was resurrected. I was coming here to search a question about my k&n CAI. It was installed by some previous owner. There's a lot of room in the collar around the intake tube and it moves around and makes quite a lot of noise. Does anyone else have this problem?

Unless your truck was bought new I have never seen the inside the fender part of the air intake on any Toyota`s I have worked on .

One of those things it gets removed and never replaced it seems.

If any of you guys with CAI on your early 3.4 1st Gen still have your stock airbox/intake tube/resonator and want to sell it off, please let me know.

    Thx!

    LOL @ "cold air intakes"

These "cold air intakes" that people are posting just suck in the preheated air from inside the engine bay, and maybe mix a little from what trickles in from the fender.

The only "real" CAI is either a snorkel (which actually pulls in outside air form as far away from the hot asphalt as possible) or something with an intercooler.
