Gas cap door not flush

Hey TW,

Does anyone know how to fix this? If I press hard enough, the door sits flush, but then just pops out again after a bit.

Did you try to lube it? Lithium grease?

 

Nope - haven't touched it yet. I'll definitely try that.

This may be stupid, but it would be the most obvious place to check since I can't see it in your pictures: Did the small tab that captures the door in place break off?

That's exactly where it should be. Small plastic piece. Since you're '11, it is possible that it broke after slamming the door over time. It really is a small fragile nub.

Any idea if I can replace it?

 

I'm sure you can rig something up pretty quick if you need something ASAP. Not sure of the replacement part number, but I can't imagine the cost being that high if it can even be purchased alone. Maybe a walk down the "Help" isle in pep boys or o'reilly's might find you something you can use. Lowes has those small bins for random fasteners. I'm always surprised by what I find there and take mental notes for future reference.

 

Yes you can replace go to dealer prob cost less than a buck, had this happen on my ole 03 tundra

Been down that route.... Most likely what has happened is you have over extended the swing of the door with a gas nozzle at a station and bent the super cheesy gas door hinge. I had to bend mine back on my '06 but one day months later it broke off. For those of us who have fuel perks at Giant Eagle and regularly fill fuel cans to get every bit of that 30 gallons, the gas cans can easily over extend the door.

FYI, if you do have to replace it, it's 2 parts .... Door in primer with the hinge, and the rivets, everything is separate. By the time you buy the door, that is if you lose it, get it painted, and put it on, you're at $100.

 

Mine is missing too. I looked it up. You have to buy the complete gas cap area shroud that includes the nub. It is around $22 if I recall. I didn't order yet as I thought about ordering one of the electronically co trolled gas lock kits you can search for on here. I think it was like $50 and included a little solenoid, spring, and the wiring so it would lock and release with button.

 

Interesting. Would anyone be willing to snap a picture of the little piece? I'm wondering if I can jerry rig it...
