    I haven't made it to Austin yet, but if I get ambitious on a day off, I should go for the 3hr drive. How is Lake Travis? Does it have clean water in it? Went for a kayak paddle on Lake Texoma last Sunday. Folks at the rental place, say they've never seen anyone paddle across the arm, folks just tend to paddle along the shoreline. The water temp was like a heated pool!

    Travis is warm for the first 18 inches or so, and then it's a friggin' ice bath. It's also full, but there may be some remaining debris from spring floods when it was 17' over.

    Don't cliff jump. Things have shifted.

    It's deep and can get a bit more chop that is safe for a kayak, especially when the big boats are hauling. Lake Austin/Lady Bird Lake near downtown is much better for kayaking.

    yeah lots of boat traffic is more of a danger to me. i'm good with chop into 'white cap' level as long as i have a spray skirt for sit in kayak or a decent sit on top kayak. The rental place on Sunday just had the 10' long 'puddle jumper' sit in kayak (great primary stability, slow as molasses, and easy to swamp, dangerous in waves.) but did have one 14' sit on top that i used.

    They have places out there that rent kayaks, but the intention is to stay in the sheltered coves. You definitely don't want to get out into the middle of the lake in anything without a motor.
