    I've found that 5.5 quarts puts me right at the top notch on the dip stick every time. And the best way I've discovered for reading the dip stick is to pull it out and leave it out for a good while (15-30 mins?). That allows any oil clinging in the dip stick tube to drain down before you reinsert.

    Wait, people aren't putting 6 qts into their 2TR-FE? It says 6.1 in the manual, I could give a fuck what the dipstick says. I dumped in 6 qts, drove it once, and made my own mark on the stick at the high point after sitting and that's what I call full.

    I thought about it, and I lead the charge in suppressing "I could care less".

    But after writing it out I said fuck it, I like how "could" rolls off the tongue better.

    It is unlikely Toyota gave us a bullshit dipstick AND and bull shit capacity in the manual...I leave shit like that to Fiat/Chrysler :brianr::brianr::brianr:

    Could be burning oil because he is doing like you and under filling it....
    You should really take a little bit of time and read the manual, which outlines it all;
    Code:
    Oil capacity (Drain and refill -reference) With filter 6.1 qt. (5.8 L, 5.1 Imp.qt.) Without filter 5.4 qt. (5.1 L, 4.5 Imp.qt.)
    The imperial quart is dead, most people will reference either US qt, or LITERS. With filter change (which you should ALWAYS do when changing your oil), capacity is 6.1 qt.

    The manual also states to go by the dipstick. Just to play devil's advocate, maybe the reason why its burning so much oil is because he is over filling it, causing the crank to whip it up, resulting in more oil blow by through the PCV valve.

    You would have to be several qts overfilled before the level approaches the crankshaft.
    Also, 6 qts reads at the "full" tick on mine. I suspect that people with excessively high readings are doing one of two things (or both);
    1) taking reading after coating inside of tube with oil, causes reading to mess up.
    2) taking reading after letting engine sit too long -- oil level is supposed to be read immediately after RUNNING engine, not after letting it all drip back down.

    Dude... Are you joking? The manual also says go by the dip stick (the mark that came on it from the factory, not your garage). This is why I don't buy used cars.

    i guess people dont realize theres residual oil left in the engine that can equate to a few tenths of a quart. id assume that 6.1qts is dry. i always go by the dipstick as the manual states and have never had an issue, and i'm not going to change now. :)

    I've done 200 1gr oil changes to every 2tr. They are super rare up in Canada.

    They are the only Toyota made engine that still uses a frost plug style block heater that we install on PDI's.

    I've changed more 22RE's due to headgaskets than 2TR's. Age is a big factor with that though.

    If you believe my method is harming my engine in any way you're out of touch.

    A few tenths of a quart up or down isn't going to make a bit of a difference anyway.

    Snugtop cab high canopy.
    The 22R had one camshaft and 2 valves per cylinder too.

    You're in Alberta though, where fuel is cheap. Try in Ontario, its about 50/50 here between 4 and 6 cyl.

    Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
    I work on these things every day. I've yet to have to add more than 5 to a 4 cylinder and it's always on the top dot of the full range. Maybe the manual's talking dry-fill capacity. You can never get all the old oil out of an engine without completely disassembling it down to every last nut and bolt. I no longer have a 4 cylinder, but my 2011 always took 5 as well. Never burned or used any oil between changes either.

    Just got my truck with a 2TR-FE. I commute a lot of highway to work and I decided to go with that engine for a tad better fuel economy and also just for the reputation that the engine has (at least from who I have talked to that has owned either 4cyl motor).

    I bought my 4-cyl (2TR-FE) reg. cab brand new in Feb. 2009 and it just rolled over 180,000 miles this morning. It's never been touched other than oil changes & tires (well, I did drop a set of new plugs in it about a year ago, just because I thought I should, but it was running fine). I commute about 100 miles/day round trip - 90% of which is cruising down the interstate, so I change the oil & filter myself every 10,000 miles (yes, 10,000) and put 6 quarts of Mobil-1 5w20 "High Mileage" in it every time along with a good filter. Doesn't burn a drop yet that I can tell - and I'm still on the original water pump/seal... no leaks. I run it pretty hard too - including some towing. If it blew up on the way home today, I'd say I've easily gotten my money's worth out of it... but I suspect it'll go another 100k. Maybe more! Awesome engine. Not very exciting/powerful, but reliable as an anvil.

    I have a 2005 Tacoma 4x4 access cab with the 2tr-fe engine and have just passed 310,000kms (193,000 miles). I got it pretty cheap on the used market and it's my daily driver commute vehicle. I drive it on gravel and rough roads during the summer and winter in the Canadian Rockies. I change the oil out roughly every 5000kms with whatever 5w30 is on sale, usually Quaker State or Castrol. Aside from that, all I have done is coolant flush with Toyota Super Long Life coolant, changed the battery out and air filter. I find I put approx. 5.3 liters per oil change and use the Toyota oil filters. I am happy with the reliability of the engine for sure!
