I'd be real impressed if Toyota was able to make adjustments that quick....unfortunately, with a company that big, it takes months to years for changes to come to fruition. The GM twins were conceived years ago and are just now starting to show the sales that they were projecting. GM obviously WAS paying attention. The TSB was probably just part of the complaint/maintenance cycle but they had to do something sooner rather than later because of how prevalent it is.

If Toyota is paying attention....and I would hope that they are, whatever they come up with is going to be several years before we see it reflected in the truck (powertrain combo's specifically). If whatever it is (or they could simply do nothing) isn't available when the new Ranger and Frontier make their appearance, I could definitely see them lose the lead. I'll caveat this by saying, I have no clue what part the EPA or CAFE plays in these decisions....

Its hard to rely on your reputation for quality with all the problems that the 2d and now 3rd gens have. I've said this on other posts....Tacoma buyers are the most loyal group I've seen, but I sense that patience is wearing thin. Owners want to be rewarded for this loyalty by Toyota producing the BEST truck out there and if there are issues, that they are not hassled at the dealer for them. Toyota needs to recognize this and get it figured out going forward......

The Twins and Taco are both half-assed trucks:
-The Taco because they just took the chassis of the old truck and changed the powertrain/interior/headlights and some panels
-The Colorado/Canyon because they just took an aged global truck from Thailand and slapped on some chrome and tech for the U.S. market

What's different is why each company half-assed their midsize offering; Toyota owned the segment for decades, and they figured they could still maintain sales from their loyal customers with minimal improvements. GM was frantically trying to respond to increased midsize demand and slapped something together from their global portfolio. The current Twins are a stopgap measure; Toyota had a decade to plan the Gen 3 and they still took the lazy approach.

It'll be interesting when GM does finally do a ground-up redesign of the Twins for the U.S. market. 'New GM' has shown they can design some incredible vehicles when they try, and I fully expect the next-gen Twins will be a 100% effort. Ford could go either way with the upcoming Ranger; it could be a quick-and-dirty global parts-bin thing, or they might pull out all the stops like they did with the new F-150.

    Here is my honest assessment.

GM Twins: Good on-road trucks, so-so off road.

Tacoma: Great off-road truck, so-so on road.

Nissan Frontier: Good on-road, Very good off-road.

Either way the GM twins are gaining ground in sales. Even the aged Frontier is gaining in sales. Toyota better fix these issues soon.

The US Colorado/Canyon share very little if anything with the global counterpart.

Well, it seems you could still get a demo for a few days so why not? And while you are at it, see what they'll give you for the Taco.

You should just hold out for the new Ranger, it shouldn't be too far away.

You need to educate yourself, the GM twins are far from a half-assed attempt at slight redesign. About the only things they share with the overseas counterpart is the roof and door skins. Frame, interior, exterior, engines, ect are all new/redesigned.

Next gen will hopefully address even more of the short comings from this go around...

The new ranger really does have the potential to become the #1 threat for the tacoma. All depends on what they decide to do with it. I know if they put a manual transmission 4x4 option in it, I will heavily consider looking at it. These problems showing up on the new tacomas are not doing a good job at separating toyota from ford or any other manufacturer like they had been in the past.

Diff howling, Squeaking and creaking, driveline vibrations? Seriously? I had arguably the worst year for a ford vehicle (2001-2002) and it took over 125k miles for issues like that to show up.

I'm guessing Ford will bring what they sell in the Australian market to the American market. I don't think it will be a major redesign. I'd venture to say we get the Aussie Ranger (minus bed bar thing) with probably a 3.5L Eco Boost, locking diff, terrain control. Its a well thought out little truck from what I've seen in videos.

I'd much rather put down money on a Ranger like this than either the Canyon or Colorado especially if by some miracle we get a true turbo diesel 3.2L.

Not a big fan of the look. Prefer the Canyon.

Yea, that ford ranger looks like a mini ridgeline. For me, it's either this Taco works or I'm getting Jeep Wrangler. Being as I get shitty gas mileage anyways, what do I care. I would get sport model and mod the hell out of it. Hoping Taco works though, gonna give him a fighting chance.

I need a truck bed so jeep and 4runner doesn't do it. I already have a 2016 4runner anyway. It drives awesome but it's not a truck. The Ranger looks like the ridgeline. Dookie. May just go back to GMC or Chevy full size 4x4 z71

No way, it will not have a 3.5. I had 2.7 in my F-150 and it would kill this Taco

I hear you there. I'd like a truck bed, but again...if this taco ends up being shit I'm running out of options with trucks and don't trust GM

I wouldn't read too much into it. The m.y. 2015 Toyota Tacoma (which was redesigned like a millions ago) was outselling the 2015 GM twins by a lot. I think
look at the total sales for the m.y. 2016 and than we can talk.
