CB specifics

Just trying to find out which mount this is. Sorry if I missed the answer here in this thread.

 

Hey Melvin, for sure we need to meet-up one day and do some wheel'n!!!

Also, look into getting an external speaker when you get a chance. VERY HELPFUL to have one, believe me!!! Not a necessary thing to have, but, again, it helps quite a bit!!! The speaker at the bottom of this thread looks like it would work just fine and looks very similar to my Vanco "Big Mouth" external speaker. It does NOT need to be anything fancy other than a mono 3.5mm plug and 8ohm spkr unit, well, that I know of all of the CB ext spkr output connections are 8ohm. Anyways, for $8.66, I would go ahead and get that one.

Yeah, the Cobra 29LX is very nice looking and has quite a bit of features, but is pretty bulky. You either like it or you don't at that point. When I bought my Cobra 19 Ultra iii, LOL, I just bought it off-the-whim, LMAO!!! I was cruising through a Walmart one night, saw it, said to myself, "why the hell not...", and bought it, LOL!!! Then, shooting myself in the foot too quickly, LOL, I was like, "okay Mr. Super Genius, where you gonna mount the damn thing...", LOL???!!! I got lucky and the cigarette ashtray seem to be the perfect spot and that is where it sits today!!! Very, very minimal modding of the back-end of the center Toyota bezel where the ashtray used to be. As a matter of fact, if I wanted to put the ashtray back in, I still could, LOL!!! What I had to do didn't affect anything other than just removing, for the most part, "reinforcment plastic" molding, if you will at the back end, just so I can shove the radio back further. Anyways, it worked out very well. I even have little L-brackets to hold the radio still. I don't have pictures unfortunately, but if I ever have to take the center apart, it is always in the back of my mind to take pictures of it next time.

Well, my posts are typically known as "The Wall of Randy", LOL, so I will cut it "short" here (LMAO)! I like where you mounted the radio. It is definitely not in the way, but yet, very easily accessible and readable!!! Again, VERY NICE JOB BRO!!!

It is right next to the picture. I posted the link, as an example, of where one place you can buy it from. I would shop around as you may be able to get one for a bit cheaper??? But, that is what it is.

Do yourself a favor and buy a galaxy radio. Buy quality once and never buy again. As far as the fire stick goes it will not play a lot of power and will have a bad swr "standing wave ratio" compared to some higher end antennas. Ask yourself one question. Will you be satisfied with a bone stock setup or will you be seeking more power? If you plan to talk less than a mile or so. Go cheap. If you ever want to upgrade buy equipment that will work with those upgrades. I started with a galaxy 33 and a monkey made antenna playing 3 watts of power. The last system I was playing still used the galaxy 33 and the monkey made antenna but with several other upgrades I was playing 4000 watts.

 

Yeah but isn't that against federal law? I thought CB was limited to 4 watts.

 

Lots of things are against federal law. I am a licensed ham radio
Operator so that opens things up just a tad for me. a 4 watt radio is just about line of sight depending on terrain and the amount of rf interference in the area. My point is buy something of quality that can be upgraded in the future if you choose to. Galaxy in my opnion are one of the best radios for the money. Not super expensive but high quality.

 

Yes it is! They are starting to crack down on such activities as well. I don't necessarily agree with ALL of the laws, but I have worked with commercial public radio systems for Fire Dispatch related radio work for a number of years. Just NOT good practice to do such activities and there are reasons why certain laws exist and that should exist for obvious reasons. I don't know, just my 2cents and humble opinion.

4000W Holy SHI-!!! I would NOT want to be NEAR that antenna!!! LOL, poke the antenna through a hot dog, TX for a few seconds, COOK that BAD BOY, eat, and enjoy while camping!!! LOL!!!

I have both the 4ft Firestik and the 4ft Francis and my SWR is right around 1.7 or thereabouts. Pretty typical. Yes, you can get better, but 1.7 is NOT that bad at all!!! You have to take into consideration of antenna placement as well, where my antenna is behind center-cab. So, some of that transmit is being reflected off of the cab. Hence, the reason for probably part of the slightly higher SWR. Other than that, I get a pretty good decent SWR reading and am content with it. Just my 2cents.

 

Understood and good point, but all I am saying is that my setup is pretty good as it is. I will honestly say that I am not familiar with Galaxy units, but I do know what has worked for me and does a very good job.

It's just like the 24bit audio gig/scam? To discern the difference between 16bit and 24bit, pay $$$ just because it is 24bits. You would have to have super human hearing at that point to be able to discern the difference between 16bits and 24bits!!! My point being is that certain things are more than good enough for certain things. Not trying to argue with you man, just saying.

Btw, what HAM HT do you have and/or even base station? I want to get a base station eventually, but MAN those things are just pricey!!!

 

Lol. I am not suggesting the op try to play 4000 watts. I am just saying that if he wants to talk up the trail in rough terrain he may need a higher quality radio than a Walmart shelf midland. Galaxy, or other mid grade radio is only slightly more expensive and will give him way better tx and rx while staying fcc compliant. If he chooses to go slightly more powerful to increase his range for some reason those radios are capable of 10 watts or so with minimal tuning at a CB shop for 20$. That midland at Walmart is what it is. That's all. I am all about buying quality the first time will save money in the longtime. That's all. Oh yea, and the 4000 watt system was pretty awesome I'm my Silverado. 200 amp alternator, 4 battery banks, motor maul switching device that let me play at 18 volts with a 4 transistor amp playing into a huge custom amp. I have actually heard myself talk a few seconds after I modulated. Basically talk arround the world. That was when skip was running though. I have talked to every state in the us as well as a few other countries. Dead key a zero and swing to a hero.

 

I just know me and I am fairly typical. I am a "man if I could just get a little more out of this" kinda guy. Really ruffles my feathers when I wast my money to find out I could have done way better for a little more.

If anyone is looking for just a bit more power without running an amp and having a stock looking radio. Look into amateur 10 meter radios. You technically need a license to use one but I'm sure nobody would ever know it was transmitting more than 4 watts. I have a Connex 3300 HP I have run for years without an amp. Also works really nice with my 2 pill Fatboy amp. Just another option to keep people thinking!

How is everyone routing the antenna out of the cab?

 

Through the rubber plug under the passenger seat. Then reseal it with lots of RTV.

 

Well, for my 1st gen, it goes from the center console, up over the passenger side foot in area (I.e. underneath the glove box, if you will), behind the passenger side kick panel, underneath the door jam plastic piece, through a rubber plug that is in back on the passenger side cab, and finally OUT to where my antenna is located behind center cab up on the bed railing.

 

Any specific kind of RTV??? Did you use that clear silicone stuff you can get from HomeDepot? I still have to do that part myself, LOL!!! I don't do crazy water crossings and it sure doesn't rain all that much here in Kali!!! LOL!!! I'm also not too worried about it as the hole is fairly negligible size, BUT do want to "seal" it some day as well!!! Thanks for the input!!!

Btw, it's F'N today people, so make sure to stay hydrated, check to make sure your pets have plenty of water/shade, and monitor/check the elderly!!!

Just curious, in Kali, I can understand the heat here because Kali is desert'ish, but Baltimore, WOW, would that be considered out of the norm for sure???!!! Or is that about what would be expected for summer weather for that area/part of the globe? I would think a little bit cooler for sure???!!!

 

I used the gasket maker high temp RTV in black. Looks like a ghost spooged the under carriage rubber plug but no water is getting in that way.
