Well it either had that crappy 3-speed auto that sucked all the power out of that motor with a tall first gear (wouldn't shift out of first until about 35MPH if you stood on the gas), or it had the 5-speed stick that you had to shift at least twice before you hit 60. Either way it was at a disadvantage.

Interestingly, Pete Hagenbuch (a designer on their team) lobbied for months for a Roots-type Supercharger rather than the turbo since it would have produced more power and less waste heat, but in the 80's public perception was that everything was better with a turbo so Chrysler was determined that the 2.2 and 2.5 were going to get turbos.
Also, the 2.2 and 2.5 were never designed to be turbocharged, so the engineers who designed them originally must have been pretty proud of how well their design stood up to it, lol.

Well just look at that Mario Bros. piping going on with that 2.2, adding a supercharger could have cleaned that up nicely and would give it that nice whine.

GF and I took the '69 to the local cruise night yesterday. Got to drool over some really nice drivers. Most of the cars there were drivers, not the ultra-restored classics you see at the more formal shows. But I like drivers better; it means people have fun with their antiques instead of just keeping them in a climate-controlled garage and dusting them every so often.

This guy was hiding over out of the way; I just saw the rear quarter poking out from behind a line of boring modern cars, but I love an old Satellite.

This one had a 460 big block with a pretty radical cam. Guy said that it doesn't smooth out and run correctly until about 1800RPM. Cool truck, but he was kind of a tool. Rich boy who'd had somebody build the whole unit for him; didn't know anything about it.

    Very nice old T-bird:

It's for sale, if you're in the market

These guys had a drag race on 202 later in the evening. The Camaro had a 383 stroker and dual quads, but he got spanked. That Challenger had the 6.4 Hemi and it just walked away. Part of my childhood died. :pout:

    More from last night:

    Original miles, per the owner.

This one the owner bought it new and has had the same plate on it ever since. He uses it as a summer-only car; has a camp on one of the local lakes and he puts the car in the garage there every winter and pulls it out every spring. Never seen snow or salt.

    Last batch:

This guy tried to sneak out when I was first taking pictures so I had to snag one on the fly. Absolutely gorgeous fastback, 289 with a 4 speed.

This one the kid had driven it from California. No rust anywhere on it, original black-plate car with original everything. And because he's 19 and stupid he cut holes in the immaculate trunk pan and installed a pair of 1000 watt built-in subwoofers. One faces up into the trunk, one faces down onto the road.

    Original 302 in it, even.

This guy laid a righteous posi strip coming out of the parking lot when he left. 1st and 2nd gear, probably 80-90 feet of rubber.

....and this guy left like an old man, lol. Caught 3rd before he hit 20MPH.

More pictures should follow on Monday, from the big show I'm going to at Owl's Head this weekend. Taking the digital camera too, instead of just my phone, so the photos should be higher-quality.

I hate car show season, it's so depressing. Nice cars though.
