Occasional throttle lag in maintaining speeds, (when on off throttle coasting). Six months Mechanic trying to diagnose problems, only happened twice when he drove it. Changed all coils, spark plugs wires and fuel filter. 2004 Toyota Tacoma with 225207 miles on it.
I've got a 2004 Toyota Tacoma with 2,248.00 miles. Six months ago it started small quick loses of power in the grass peddle. It doesn't happen often or regularly. In the 6 months it only happened twice for my Mechanic, his discription is "it feels like it's falling on its face".
We first replaced fuel filter then he did tune up, all new coils and unrelated repairs. Water pump, hoses and belts.
Timing bet done at 150,000 miles.
I've read all related threads on this subject and found the sea foam to be my next try. But I can't find sea foam. Is it a boat related item?
I also did the 100 peddle pump on the grass throttle.
I'm at a loss here. I Love my Toyota and don't really want to sell it. I drive 80 miles a day and it is terrifying when I get a 3 second loss of power in the fast lane on the 417, people won't let you over.
    It's becoming deadly Dangerous.
It's happening more frequently, just not when the Mechanic is testing it.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly Appreciated.
    Thank you

My 2004 v6 4x4 TRD double cab is starting to have the same issue and would love to know if you found anything.

At first it happened at slow speeds and only soon after starting the truck. Once it happened at a faster speed I took it to the dealer. They said the MAF was reading 74 when it should be near 100, so it was replaced. This seemed to fix it for a week. It didn't happen at all. Now it has started again at slow speeds.

Yeah, I was going to say you might want to give the mass air flow (MAF) sensor a good cleaning, maybe even your throttle body. Both are very easy to do on your own, be sure you use MAF sensor cleaner specifically (not electrical/carb cleaner). May even have to replace it, but start with cleaning it and see if that helps.

Is your check engine light on?

The check engine light (CEL) is NOT on. Never has been while driving. It does come on during the light test before starting the engine so it does work.

If you have ever ridden a motor cycle and forget to turn the petcock on or run out of gas thats what it feels like then all of a sudden back to normal............. thats your cat plugging up assuming its not fuel related....

I learned this the hard way since then I have saved people alot of headaches

take it off and see if you can see through it. depending on what you have I have cali 4cyl with two cats not a good idea to run with my front one disconected because there is only a manifold left besides the noise you dont want to suck in cold air or start scrubbing cyl. if its like mine I undid the pope behind the first one and shown a flashlight down the o2 sensor hole but that wont be nec just look at it if it doesnt look honeycomb any more its gonna be all melted and [lugged up. I have had two front ones go bad the rear one is still normal looking. its a gradual loss of power and fuel mileage too but so gradual hard to tell until it gets to the point of complete failure

I had to drill mine out the first time until toyota replaced the first one I got almost double the gas mileage but drove around with cat efficiency cel and a loss of torque

fyi any car in usa 96 and newer is covered under FEDERAL MANDATE/LAW (doesnt matter on owner or title ) 8 years or 80k miles for any smog related part/ the dealer must replace for free and they hate that and dont offer it up either. If you dont know it they will normally charge you .

I will check the CAT tonight. There has been a drop in mileage, the truck is down to about 15.5 average with half city, half highway.

This truck has a few miles on it, about 175,000 miles.

It's the Throttle Position Sensor and it is a well known problem. My 04 does the exact same as yours. At 2000-2500 rpm the engine just loses power for no reason. I have taken mine off and checked it with a multimeter and sure enough when twisting going from stop to stop the meter reads OL ( Off Line ) in one spot meaning the contacts are losing contact. When the ECM sees this OL it assumes that the driver is letting off of the gas. The sad thing is Toyota doesn't sell the TPS sensor separately neither does any parts distributor. Toyota wants you to buy the complete throttle body. Now.....You can get the sensor from china. Alibaba has them, but you have to buy multiple sensors to get one. I have been trying for the last week or so to buy 5 of them. I have seriously gotten the run-around.
    Here is the part# 89452-35030.
It is the part number for the 4 prong TPS sensor that is for the drive by wire motors. The 3 prong sensors will not work.

Seafoam is pretty easy to find, its not a marine product. It'll be at most any parts store like napa or what ever youve got in your area. It would definitely be worth a try fur ya at this point...

I swapped the fuel filter and front CAT this weekend and the hesitation issue appears to have gone away, and there feels like for power. Swapping the CAT was a bear. Snapped off one bolt and rounded off one nut. Two other bolts were too rusted to even try and use a wrench on. A Dremel with flexible lead and cutoff wheel cut the bolts and a long drill bit drilled them out.
