I can only afford 2 tires, where should I put them?

I can only afford 2 tires right now (the other 2 hopefully in a month)
I need a 10 ply
I would like an all terrain tire bc I plan on going off road.
I want something with good snow traction, I don't care about dry or wet traction really. (or do all brand new tire have decent snow traction bc of all the tread)
Should I put both tires on the back or put one on each of the drive wheels
I will have to use 4x4 in the snow and ice. Putting one up front and one in back will look stupid but will be better for the transfercase and all. But will the different size (just tread difference) on the same axle cause a problem for the differentials.
Anyone with experience in this (done one or the other and had it gone badly)
I have a 1st gen so I tend to think its slight more durable to not so nice usage but I don't want to do anything really bad to it either.

I like the way the side tread looks (like on all the mud tires) any all terrains that have those. I want my tires to last at least 30k, I don't need a set of strictly off road tires. I do a lot of highway but would like to go offroad once or twice a month.
I don't care about how noisy anything is.

I can't cut back driving. If that was an option I would've stated it.

 

then how about just getting crapos not all terrians for now and then upgrade when you have the cash

 

And I'm not entirely bald right now. If it was summer out I would be fine for another 3-4k miles. But the snow clogs up the small amount of tread I have on my tires and I basically have slicks. I would rather not wreck my truck bc I tried to skimp through the winter on bad tires.

 

I need the 10 plys though I haven't found any cheapo tires that would work. And I sorta need all terrains. I work 225 miles away from home and need the all terrains to get up the mountain of a driveway to the place where I stay. I travel there once a week. I'm a believer of just do it right the 1st time.

 

Matt, you looked around craigslist for a set of slightly used tires? Maybe try Ebay? I got mine cheap on eaby, they only had 5,000 miles on them.

 

I think you need to clarify between want and need. I know you want an all terrain tire, because you plan on off-roading. However, if you really only have to drive to and from work to survive, get what you need. You probably only need a good all-season tire that works on roads--both gravel and paved. If you go with a decent all-season, with load ratings and other specs similar to the OEM tire, you can probably buy four tires. If you live through winter and can work more to earn more money this spring, buy the tires you want then. If you die on icy roads with bad tires because you're irrational, it doesn't really matter what you wanted.

However, the general rule is: If you can only buy two tires, they go on the rear. It's easier to handle a vehicle that pushes than correct an over-steer.

 

I could probably get away with a good all season. But I do need a Load E rated tire. I haul a lot of weight and tow heavy trailers.
How much could I really save by switching to an all season vs. all terrain. If its only gonna save me a couple hundred bucks then. I'm still gonna be spending over 600 on tires. I can get a good set of all terrains for 200 a piece mounted and balanced. I look now about the all seasons.
Is it really that bad to have new tires with old ones.


I did look on craigslist but everybody seems to want only 100 less than what i can get the tires for. They bought them at pepbboys or some stupid crap and overpaid for them. They say "I payed 200 a piece and used them for 3k miles so I want 150 a piece for them" when in reality I can get them for 175 a piece. Usually the cost of shipping (from ebay) and then getting them mounted and balanced is so high It's not worth it.

 

I know whhat you mean about CL and what people think their junk is worth. Try this site, they have really good prices and free shipping. You will still have to pay for mounting and balancing, but you will have to pay for that no matter what.

I went on tire rack just to look at prices. The cheapest actuall was an all terrain tire. Khumo road ventures at. They were 140 a tire. they would be about 155 to get them and have them installed I still would only be able to get now and 2 later. And those were a load range D. I could use those. I would rahter not though. Unless there's tires that can be bought and installed for 100 bucks a piece I won't have money to get all 4.

No problem. I couldn't remember what site it was either. I got lucky with my wheels and tires, $800 for both, delivered. When I buy new I will likely used that site I sent you. Let me know how you make out.

 

what combo of wheels tires did you get. I will most likely end up spending more than that If I get the tires I want.

 

Don't know if Firestone carries anything you are looking for but they have run that constant buy 3 get one free deal for months around here now. Beg, borrow or steal for the money for the '3rd' to complete the set.

 

I got brand new Helo 842 and BFG AT's with 5000 miles on them. I made an offer on Ebay and the guy accidentally accepted. He was pretty cool and honored his mistake, I gave him my old wheels and tires to help him out, he ended up selling them on Ebay as well.

 

Ussually the 3 tires you have to buy are more expensive than what I can get all 4 for at my local tire shop. Its some mom and pop place that treat everyone real good.

 

It always seems that they jack up the price on the other 3.
