Many people have said they've noticed their rear end is making a howling noise when coasting on the freeway under light throttle or Feathering the throttle. Is yours making this noise have you reported it to the dealer? Please also share your trim and approximate build month and year. If you're not sure please test it out before voting. @aero90 @Z50king @bassman177 @Mannys @Mace587 @bulldog @jeff_taco_4x4 @Diablo6 @fdbyrne @scornwel @Judicar @MasterPenguins @marazaii @WMDtech

My rear diff has already been replaced for failure due to premature wear on the differential under warranty. No root cause was provided. My truck was built 11/15. TRD OR 4x4 DCSB

Mine was but 11/15 also. According to the dealer and a Toyota Field service rep I am just hearing my tires at exactly 62mph while featuring the throttle....dip shits.

My rear diff has also been replaced once, and I still have the noise.

TRD Off Road 4x4 DCSB, don't have my build date at the moment. It is either 01/16 or 02/16 though.

Does everyone that's having this problem have and OR? I have a sport and usually have my music cranked so I haven't heard anything, but I'll get a build date and listen on my way home today.

My sister has the SR5 and it is making the noise. It's still in the beginning only 2600 miles so not too loud yet. My TRD OR got louder over time at 12000 I could hear it over the radio and took it in

My diff is quiet. One of the first things I did was change fluid to redline 75w-85

Mine does. Started with less than 500 miles on the truck.

TRD Off Road DCSB Manual built in Texas 6/16

My differential is being replaced when the parts become available. If the new one howls I'll probably take it to a dedicated differential shop, let them fix it, and then take Toyota to small claims court for reimbursement. Win or lose it would get the problem out of the forum and into the public record. It would also blow a hole in their stance that the sound is normal. It may be common, but the word normal implies that nothing is wrong therefore it can't be fixed. I think a few hours in the hands of a differential guru would definitely show that it's not normal and really can be fixed.

    Rant over... Carry on.

TRD OR DCSB 4x4, 04/16 - Sitting at the dealership waiting to get replaced now, almost a two week wait for parts alone. Started noticing howl around 500 miles, by 1k miles it was loud enough to hear over the stereo.

My truck had it for the first ~300 miles I owned it. It was very faint, I could barely hear it, but right around 55mph it howled just a little bit. Since the 300 mile mark it has stopped completely, I've put another ~3500 miles on the truck and no howl at all.

I use my howl as a speed limiter. The road I commute on has a 55 MPh speed limit, but I can get away with going 60. When the howl begins i know im doing 62 and I just back of the throttle. It's like a poor mans cruise control.

    Mostly stuff I built.
Mine is started at about 8500 miles. DCSB TRD OR MT built 03/16.
Took it in for service then reported it took it back in last Monday. They drained the fluid checked for shavings. Had fine shavings in it I took a sample of it myself as they were draining it. Refilled with fresh gear oil from their bulk stock. I am good friends with the sales manager, service manager and 2 of the master techs at my dealer so I get some access not granted to normal customers. They opened a TAS case on it and called it in on the tech line while I was there. Tech even checked the backlash through the fill plug and said it was tight. Parts (complete 3rd member) on order waiting for them to come in.

@smitty99 and any one else can y'all post op a copy of your service records regarding your differential replacement so that others have a leg to stand on when they take their trucks in and get the "that's normal" excuse? I'll post mine later.

4x4 TRD OR DCSB, 6k miles right now and a strong howl at 59 mph, a strange whistle (may or may not be diff) at 67 mph, and a noticeable howl in the 60's/70's even without feathering the throttle. Changes to more of a "whirring" noise at 80. I don't typically drive faster than 80 so that's all I got.

Was completely silent until 2-3 thousand miles ago. Brought it up at my 5k service but they were too busy to check it (frustrating but understandable since I didn't book an appointment specifically for that).

I'm going to call toyota and get a case number. But, I don't want anything replaced until toyota fixes the rumbling vibration (which I believe is driveline related) when driving at lower speeds. If it doesn't happen before I reach 25-30k miles or so, then I will push for a replacement diff or rebuild.

Next differential will get a fluid change after the first 500 miles.

Yep I got it. 4x4 TRDOR AT with 8500 miles. Build date 12/2016. I took it in and Toyota acknowledged it and gave me a case number. Nothing else.

I have that same rumble. I am going to make sure that toyota documents this at my 10,000 mile check. It is total bs they have told me it is the tires twice now...
