What are you trying to track with it? You realize that it is implemented with bluetooth LE, right? That means that it has a theoretical maximum range of 160 feet in an RF clean (no other bluetooth or wifi signals to compete with) and unobstructed environment. In other words, if you hook one onto your KEYS, you'll have to walk your house and yard still, until your phone can lock onto its signal.

The stuff they are talking about with "crowd locate" depends on LUCK, as in somebody who happens to be running their software, just HAPPENS to be within 160 feet of whatever you are looking for. It will then relay the location to you. But it isn't going to do something magic, like find your car in the airport parking lot. For that, you need something a little bit more robust, like leaving a cell phone in your car and tracking it with android device manager.

Edit: that is probably not a bad idea for repurposing an old cell phone. Get a pay-per-use service plan, set up a routine to switch data on when it receives a special text message, then locate it with GPS.

This is the same thing that Tile does (www.thetileapp.com). In theory, you lose an item with the tracking device attached to it, and it will end up in BT range of someone who also has one of these tracking devices (and thus the associated app on their phone), so their phone anonymously broadcasts onto the network of users that "Item: 1234 has been found at GPS location ____". If you're the owner of lost item 1234, your phone pops up a notification and says "Your item has been found at GPS location _____".

I stress "In theory" because this works REALLY well if your item is lost in a well populated area with lots of people using the platform. However, I personally have Tiles and have met MAYBE one other person who uses it. I live in Austin, a tech hub, and there aren't TONS of people that I know about with these Tiles.

That being said, I have a Tile in my truck. I used to use it to remind me where I parked, but the new iOS will do that automatically and Google (on iOS or Android) will also do that. I also have one on my truck keys in case they get lodged in a couch cushion I can make them play a tune.

    Glad to help!
Rule of thumb: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is, so study it until you find the catch ;)
A worldwide locator system would be worth a heck of a lot more than a 1-time sales fee -- its something you'd be able to sell to the US military for *millions*, and just imagine what they'd be able to do with it, like distributing them to terrorists and being led right to their hideouts to be immediately followed by very big and very precise bombs. Something like that would revolutionize warfare.
