Yikes.. Enough time with the PB blaster and a wire brush could probably knock em loose. Makes me appreciate living here in cali. I had my gramps old willys jeep I was trying to rebuild succomb to the rust. There was so much it wasnt worth even trying to fix

I agree I always fill it at half tank or when it gets to 1/3 left in the tank. I think it keeps the pump cool since gas is "cold" to the touch

You guys and your low fuel lights... I don't even have one so I just fill it when it gets low, like 1/4 or 1/8

I think it'd look better with some new glass fendors, but they'll have to wait, taking the truck in Tuesday to hopefully get the fear end fixed up...

I believe this to be an internet fallacy. If gas is really needed to cool the pump, the gas running through the pump would also keep it cool.

Also, take a temperature reading of your gas tank on a hot day and let me know how 'cool' it is.

    Exactly.............yet again
Fuel runs thru EVERY nook and cranny inside the pump. It is the sole lubricant for the motor bearings, quenches the arcing of the armature brushes and flushes away the debris from said arcing while keeping temps in check.

I was always warned that when your gas is low the pump is constantly sucking in all the crap at the bottom of the tank, thus ruining your fuel pump. Any knowledge with this theory? ...do are trucks have a fuel pump sock?

Yes, yes they do. The service replacement Denso socks are "finer" than OEM and as "fine" as the main fuel filter.
Keep in mind that the fuel pump is constantly and continuously circulating fuel from the bottom of the tank thru the fuel system/lines.

Cut up and sitting in a pile waiting for me.
I don't believe this. I had a Chevy 2500 work truck 2005. I got it when it was brand new 12 miles on the ticker. Company gave it to me. I had it for 11 years and 198000 miles. It was a utility body which meant it was fucked for full with gas on the new pumps. It constantly shit off an would take 30-45 mins to fill a tank. Roughly 27 gallons. Long story I knew exactly how many miles past the light going on I could get before it ran out. I ran it in that light for 10 years. Always low. Ran out several times. But filing was such a bitch. Anyways. The truck just turned 210000 miles and still no issues. I know the guy who still drives it. Just my experience with that theory I know it's a Chevy not Toyota

    Thanks guys.

My take from this is that it is an urban legend that the fuel pump must be submerged to keep it cool or it is bad for the pump because of heat.

The pump is capable of delivering in excess of 60 psi against a dead head and has an "over pressure" relief valve to allow this excess pressure to bleed off. This valve is on the top, after the fuel has gone thru the rest of the pump.
Yellow arrow is the "back flow" check valve/fuel line connection, red is the "over pressure" relief valve.

    Also. Gas is not "cool"

It just appears that way because it evaporates very quickly causing a cooling sensation. Just like alcohol. Take rubbing alcohol and poor a drop on your skin. It'll feel much cooler due to the same reason.
