I was kinda thinking about doing this, but ideally I would like to sell my stock wheels and tires to make some sweet cash money back! I am still considering exactly this though. It probably depends on what my dealer says about the tire swap.

Anyone care to explain how. 1 or 2" larger Tires would have any affect on warranty. The truck is rated to tow what 5k pounds or haul like 1500lbs.

I'd love to hear the science behind a service advisor say the 10 extra lbs a corner killed a trans rated to dragging 500x that.

No they don't. They have to prove it caused it. To deny something.

They deny people TSBs every day chief. How do you explain that? If they deny the warranty work because you put larger tires on, I hope you enjoy the money and time it takes hiring an attorney

Here's an idea of how much your speedoeter can be off with a one size up in tire. I recently got dinged for a speeding ticket so I had them do a calibration on a dyno to see how much change I got from going from 265/70/16 to 265/70/17 tires on my OR. Dyno guy says the calibration requirement from the factory is + / - 5% and he usually see Tacos running about 3-5 mph faster than indicated. Here's a copy of my certified dyno run that I used in court
    1465042122825163542585.jpg

When you factor in the 5% factory error and the 1.5% increase in tire diameter you can see how much difference a simple plus size can change actual speed.

This helped reduce my reckless driving charge (+20 mph over posted recorded by lidar) to simple speeding as indicated by the speedo of what I thought I was doing.

EXACTLY. not that they SHOULD. But every precaution should be taken by the consumer. Especially with a truck that has some issues out there.

Go in like an Ass, and you'll likely be treated like one. Go in courteous and sensible and most dealers will work with you

To elaborate, technically it doesn't affect warranty, but in a practical sense, they are the first line of "evidence" provided to Toyota or just for their own approach toward service. If they say "such and such was caused by your oversized tires", then you now have the burden of proving that claim false or lawyering up and making them prove the tires did damage.

Either way, a PITA. However minimally oversized tires are typically not even on the dealership's radar and I wouldn't worry for a bit. If you had noticeably bigger tires and they were claiming whatever, you would probably be able to snap some pics around the lot and find similar lifted/non-stock tire sizes on some of their trucks which you could bring up to them >> then corporate >> then lawyer. Some dealerships just suck and others are fair and follow the legal ins and outs pretty well.

Denying a tsb is one thing. There's different levels to tsb. Ame stipulate to change when problems arise others don't.

I've fault dealers before on "warranty denial claims" because they're like your exhaust voided you warranty. Go ahead and put that in writing for me mr service writer.

It's one thing if you tow a gtr in with a twisted driveshaft and have 888r's on it with a slew of ecu recorded launches. It's another to have a transmission issue and just have a tire with a slightly larger diameter.

It's not like we're talking about 10ply 40"s on the truck

You just had two techs for other manufacturers tell you how it works. Not sure what to say at this point if you don't understand it.

I denied coverage on a newish truck today. 37's on a truck with electric steering and complaining that the rack is noisey. Denied coverage on a Camaro yesterday due to engine modifications that led to an oil leak.

Not that I've had to deal with it before but what if the dealer has installed the lift and oversized tires, how would the warranty work then? I've seen a few Pro Comp lifts installed at a few dealers and they're asking $40K for lifted SR5s.

Are you saying the dealer is now voiding the factory warranty when they do this before the truck is even sold?

I understand what they've said and I've fought both Audi and vw on bullshit warranty claims. One being a catback caused a converter to fail and the other being wheels caused abs brake issues.

I'm not a go in and be a dick dude but when the service writers both times did that I barked up the tree and in both situations problems were remedied without litigation.

Maybe I just got lucky. Maybe both dealers didn't stand their ground.

I'm not gonna let the fear of something with no sea legs stop me from doing something that has no bearing.

Reality is dealers are denying shit for no reason already.

The dealer eats the repair or fudges the fact when they submit a warranty claim. All our trucks are built by an outside company. If an issue is caused by the lift/tire, they get the bill

And both of those sound valid. Well no idea what the camaro did but if it's cams in and they have oil leaks yeah. I get it.

I am gonna talk to my Service advisor at the dealer that I frequent about it. I feel like they will be cool about it especially if I have them do the mount and install. I know for a fact that my dealer recently sold a new Tacoma SR5 with a lift and larger wheels and tires (that I am pretty sure that they installed). Luckily I haven't had a single issue at my dealership yet (been in 5 or 6 times since I bought my taco), but I haven't gone in guns blazing either. Just calm and I try to treat everyone there with respect.
