I mostly drive rural roads, so very little stop and go, and rarely over 50 mph. Those are the major factors. Once I'm over 60 it's not pretty. If I'm trying to keep up with highway traffic while towing the camper... well, I've been in the 13s.

i always love hearing the news, or anyone for that matter, referring to jet fuel as "high octane"........if they said high octane av gas, id agree.

i was over at honda-tech for about 12 years, and you always saw threads, i put race gas in my car and it slowed down.

I love the fact as to how many times this topic has come up. People don't seem to understand how fuel works and that 94 octane is not going to get them great milage.your truck needs 87 give it 87. Anything else and your just throwing your money away.

I'll have to admit to my previous ignorance on this higher octane fuel issue. I've been running 87 octane since my last fill up and I have to say the difference in performance is minimal. This is not saying there is no difference, just not enough to justify the price difference. Can't comment on fuel efficiency yet, but I can imagine it to be better.

Your engine is designed to run optimally on 89, or less optimally on 87. Go higher than 89 and you will experience poor combustion due to the combustion inhibitors added to the fuel to prevent preignition in high compression engines.

Whose engine is designed for 89 octane? Everything I read on the 4.0 V-6 says 87 octane.

Just brought my '12 DCLB back to Wisconsin from the Seattle area. Used 87 pump gas with "up to 10% ethanol" at every fill up. In Washington state with lower speed limit I averaged 19.92 then as I trekked east and into Montana with 80 mph speed limit the mileage dropped to 17.38 at it's lowest. Finally making my way into Wisconsin and back to 70 mph speed limit with a couple days of commuting thrown in on the tank which is all 55 my mileage is up to 21.45.

Truck was empty, nothing in the bed, stock original tires, stock everything, just myself, a small suitcase and a flight bag.

I will need to fill up later this week and that will be a full tank of 70 miles per day commuting from my house to my office with a couple local trips to the winery and bar over the weekend. Will see how much speed limit affects mileage but in my unscientific trip last week the average speed made a huge difference.

With regards to Octane ratings, years ago when my daughter was racing karts we found a station in South Texas that had 84 Octane at the pump. We tried everything in these "sealed" motors from 87 to 100 Aircraft fuel all to no avail. However for whatever reason those little Italian motors would absolutely scream on 84 octane.

The lower the octane, the quicker the fuel ignites!
Is you 2012 DCLB a 4WD, an automatic, a V-6??? We need these details too in comparing figures. It sounds like your mileages are right on based on your driving. 20 point something is the best I ever got, empty bed, long flat highway driving (Arizona).

    I guess I didn't include everything, yes a V-6, Automatic 4WD.

I'm actually pretty happy with the mileage and as a side note it doesn't make a lot of difference to me, have had the truck 4 years and just rolled over 50k miles on the trip back from Washington.

Don't think they really "required" it, but it was "suggested".

I believe it was required, the HP rating was also 245 vs the 236 we have.

in my 2011 Dbl. Cab I started getting "pinging" or knocking as some people call it during the summer months on 87 Octane. Took it to the dealer and was told there is a TSB in which they will flash the ECU to make the problem go away. When I asked what all was involved in flashing the the ECU, no one knew exactly what the flash did but they all assumed it did something with the timing. A little hesitant to let them go ahead with the "flash" of the ECU I got a few more opinions from the two other Toyota dealers in my area and both tech's at each dealer told me to start running 89 or 93 (we have 87, 89 and 93 available here) instead of getting the TSB done.

I decided to take their advice for at least 1 or two tanks. The problem went away almost immediately after the first full tank. Since then I've always stayed with 93. Not for better MPG's but for peace of mind the motor is running better. It also helps that my company pays for my gas :anonymous:

    No, sorry. I owned a 2005 V6 Tacoma
87 octane was the only grade suggested. Also, Premium is not 89 anywhere is it???

Its funny that I still had a 10 year old magazine laying around that had a mid sized truck shootout, you can see under the Tacoma they have 91 Octane and that was one of the digs against it in the article. Also when I was buying my 08 the Salesgirl also told me the new 08s now take regular 87 Octane while the previous years of Tacoma and Tundra 4.0s required a minimum of 91. Yeah I don't know where 89 Octane would be considered Premium either, around here 92 - 94 is considered Premium.

Magazines and books get stuff wrong ALL THE TIME. I owned a 2005 4WD V-6 DC Tacoma for almost 5 years. There was NOTHING in the owner's handbook that said to use anything other than 87 octane gas.
