Does your 3G TRD Squeak?

Well, after a few rounds of emails and phone calls, direct contact with Toyota's customer service, the dealership's General Manager, two different service managers and two different assistant service managers and having made 4 trips to the dealer, for this issue my leaf packs have been replaced.

 

Took it into the dealer, they were able to replicate the problem, but there is no other 16 MT Off road where I stay to compare it to. My truck is a freakin unicorn on this tiny island. They're waiting for toyota's response. Other than that, I love my truck.

 

Mine don't squeak

It's a great truck!

No squeak here, 8200 miles on the clock. Improper installation will cause or lead to a consistent squeak. More than likely your bushings are damaged.
If the springs are torqued on the lift without the truck load, the bushings get crimped or squeezed when the vehicle is put on the ground. Eventually, the bushings will crack and need replacement. Same thing happens with UCA.
Get the proper installation or suffer

Had a higher pitched squeak develop that made the truck sound like a 1950's beater. Took it in and they replaced 1 set of leaf springs. Sound was still there. Took it back in and they found a body bolt that was "not aligned correctly"...not sure HOW it's not aligned correctly but they took it out, found that the metal on the side of the black bolt was shiny from where it had been rubbing up and down, and they replaced it.

So, new bolt and NO MORE SQUEAK!!! : ) It's been over a week now and the sound has not come back so hopefully that was the problem all along.

 

Is it just me, or do the folks with the majority of issues come from the OR trucks. As far as the SR, SR5, Limited, and Sports...I just don't hear near as many major complaints. Perhaps the OR crawl control mechanics, tires, suspension parts, etc., aftermarket mods (bigger tires/lifts) is just creating issues that were not thoroughly thought out by the engineers. Moreover, perhaps the OR drivers are really "rough" on their trucks while putting more wear-n-tear during their off-roading adventures than they dare to admit (I've seen pics that make me cringe or think "why would anyone do that to their truck"). Anyway, just thought I'd "throw that out there" for TW to digest as to why so many "issues" that these unhappy 3rd gen Tacoma owners are facing. Feel free to "rip" me apart if you like

 

For what it's worth, I had the squeak problem and mine is a Sport 4x4. And the noise developed while driving through a PAVED wildlife park of all places.

Truck has been in the shop for two days, they inspected the bushings and everything else after disassembling and can't find why it's happening. According to the service manager they disassembled everything and it still squeaked. Wouldn't that logically point that you need to go further?

 

Just got off the phone with Toyota HQ. Confirmed I was lied to about the "if you can't figure it out, get a Toyota regional tech". He told me that's not how it works. So now I got an appointment with a second dealership service department and have the first one in the sights from HQ and will hear back. Hopefully I can figure it out for all of us.

Yeah that's bullshit dude. A warranty is fine but I want the problem resolved. Now my case will he sent to a Toyota tech if this next dealer can't fix it. Glad the lady at Toyota HQ told me the guy was bullshitting.

I think you're on to something. But as far as leaf spring noise goes, any different accessories would have no effect on them. And I don't think the drivers would make any difference at all either.
But it could be that when they adjust the assembly run for the TRDOR something changes.
The point is, the installation is the most likely culprit, not the truck.

There are SR5, sport, TRD OR, and my limited with issues at this point. It doesn't just span a particular trim. I just picked up my truck from the dealer since they couldn't fix the problem. Pending a visit to another dealer 40 minutes away and see what they have to say. 2 full days of work and they couldn't figure it out or at least offer a loaner? I got the "shrug" look and was told "squeaks and rattles can take a week to figure out". Ok....well at least offer a loner.

Their negligence in not telling me it was staying overnight on Saturday caused a fiasco in itself. Them telling me "it doesn't work that way" when I asked them to file a case with toyota since they obviously aren't able to fix the issue and it's replicable on only my truck out of the whole lot pissed me off since it was a bald faced lie.

Toyota HQ has been noticed as I said, the place I'm taking it to has a chance to fix it now. They at least told me I would get a loaner if they need it for more than 5 hours. Worst comes to worst, at least I don't have to force my wife to stay home when she needs to go to work. The worst part is, I doubt it spent more than 4 or 5 hours in the bay, it was already outside and had collected enough dust to prove that much.

When I help people and was in a customer service position in the past, I let people know what was going on. I told them we don't know but we will figure it out and gave them options on how to proceed. Not leave them i the farking dark. If you don't know how to fix the issue, you keep working it and call people. You figure that crap out. Worst comes to worst, you get a Toyota engineer to come look at the damn thing.

 

Lol so I just started hearing this noise this week. Yet, my truck is filthy right now so I will wash it and let you guys know if it goes away? Correct me here experts on the squeaketh!

 

If it doesn't go away, just do what me and Smitty have done so far and take it in until its fixed. Make sure you get a loaner, any vehicle that they cannot diagnose and fix but can replicate should and would fall under Toyota's loaner policy. I'm just glad to have my damn truck back, even if it does squeak. I hated driving my wife's Passat. I never new I wanted and needed a truck until I had one.

 

Unfortunately this is pretty much the truth of my experience. Every time I took it in I requested a loaner and ultimately the issue was resolved.

 

Find a local place where the squeek always shows up. Then go and spray a small area with a pump type garden sprayer filled with water. Imediately drive over the spot where there is always a squeek. Once the squeek goes away have the dealer look into what you found. Start at the axle u bolt area on each side then the shocks and then move to the ends of each spring. I would check each body mount with a wrench an see if any spin easily. Keep spraying small areas one at a time and eventually you will find the offending area. Its not rocket science just takes someone to take the time to find it.

 

I had two different distinct squeaks in my 2016 SR 4x4. For the record I haven't done too much wheeling but I have been through some deep patches of water when it rained pretty good in Florida. The first squeak was high pitched and short coming from the rear end portion of the truck. I isolated it with a buddy to the assembly holding my spare tire in. Turns out when I got a new spare to match the KO2s I'm running the garage didn't tighten it up all the way. That was quick and simple. The second squeak is more of a loud creaking/groaning and it only happens when the truck has been in dry heat for awhile and while I'm braking or accelerating enough to cause the front end to dive or rise. On rare occasions I can hear a small version of it after exiting the cab of the truck as well. My 10k is coming up soon and I am hoping this persists so I can demonstrate it to the dealer.

 

Mine does exactly the same thing. I, like you, live where it has been very hot lately (LA.."lower Alabama"). The tech who has performed all the minor "fixes" on my Taco said it was a defective bushing caused by improper installation. It comes from the front passenger's side of the vehicle. He ordered some part(s) (?) and will call when they come in. He and the service writer have been great! They replaced my rear door window seal, checked and added transmission fluid, and did both the current TSB's with no hassle. Hope he can solve the squeaking problem.
