You probably blew it up. You'd have to limit the current as to not overload the coil. Using AC relay in DC will work for a short while. AC relays have a shader ring to keep the armature from changing state each cycle

I bought a few extra of the needed relays when I did mine...if I can find them I'm willing to help a TW member out. I'll look for them tomorrow and post if I find them.

I'm new to TW and this is my first post, so I apologize if I don't refer to a part or member in the right way.
I just bought a 40amp 12VDC DPDT relay on ebay and did this mod on my 2015 TRD off road. From what I read, it needs to be a 12 volt direct current (12VDC) It doesn't need to be a 40 amp, but that just happened to be what I got. I followed the directions in the "cheap mods" thread and it worked perfectly. My relay didn't tell me which side the "A" or "B" pole was on, but the pins were numbered 1-8 with 1 being on the left side (opposite of DDD's picture). I just read the instructions from the other thread and checked to make sure all of my wires were good by comparing it to the picture DDD put up. My wires were exactly opposite (left to right) of the picture.
IMG_2849.jpg Here is how mine turned out. There are three wires that are bright red and the two of them in the yellow connectors are spliced into the violet wire powering the ECU. The other bright red wire in the red connector is the ground wire. This picture should give you an idea of what colors need to be where.

Here are some of the other pictures that might help. Maybe they won't, but here they are anyway...
IMG_2852.jpg This picture is where I decided to tie it all up and where I grounded it. After I saw that it all worked, I put electrical tape around each connector just to make sure nothing would get between them and short something out. I could have wrapped the tape up farther on the wires but I didn't think it was necessary considering how little action the back of the glove box sees. Everything was clear and out of the way hanging it right there.

IMG_2850.jpg I twisted the two bare ends of those red wires and clamped them in the blue splice clip thing with the violet wire. Those two red wires are the two red wires in the yellow connectors in the first picture I posted here...just wanted to make it clear where these wires are coming from and going to.

    IMG_2848.jpg IMG_2847.jpg
I hope all of this helps someone out. It worked flawlessly for me!

I know this is an old thread but had a quick question before I dive into this. Are you splicing into the wires on the harness side or cut the wire and use the side not going into the harness? thanks in advance

You will end up cutting some of the wires and splicing into the violet one. In this picture, you can see the wires that will be cut and hooked up to your relay. Those cut wires are on the left of the picture. The wires that stay intact are in the nice and neat bundle going straight up and down in the middle of the picture. Don't cut the violet wire. That's the one you splice into and I have the blue clip on that one with two red wires coming out of it. There is another picture (in my earlier post) that shows where I plugged those two red wires into the relay.

But yes, there will be wires cut, and I hope this picture helps you see the ones that will need to be cut and plugged into the relay.

Would it be worthwhile to do this mod to make an improvement on my quarter-mile time and keep from getting wheel spin? Or should I just stick with the LSD?

Are you sure you want to improve your quarter-mile time in a tacoma? It's a little scary to do the mod, but it only took me about an hour with lots of re-checking and taking my time. So it's not like it takes too much time but if you don't feel comfortable, just don't do it. But I like the fact that I don't have to go into 4L to use the locker.

I want to say that the lights that come on for me are the "trac off", the rear lock light, and my ABS Off light. I don't remember anymore lights than those ones when I lock it in 2wd. Do you have a picture of the other side so we can see your wiring? I'm not very knowledgeable about the electric stuff in cars. I just followed the instructions that I read on here, but we can do our best to help...unless it works for you...?

My wiring looks the same as yours and here are the lights that come on. I can hear the relay click but those lights stay on regards and my 4x4 switch doesnt work.
Two red wires are from the violet, i checked for power- okay. Black wire is ground. The rest is as follows by the instructions.
    Anyone has a suggestion? IMG_20160721_223133.jpg

Yeah, yours is just like mine except they are on the opposite side. All of the wires seem to be in the same order though. I would just try them on the other side and see if it makes a difference.

My post https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/locker-anytime-mod-for-dummies-2005.353724/ goes into detail about which wire goes to which connection. It would be a bit of work but you could get the data sheets for your relay and the one I recommend. By comparing the connections you could see if you have it plugged in correctly. That's essentially what I did when I figured out the "dummies" method for this mod.

Thanks for your input guys! Really appreciate it. I went back to check the wiring from both my relay and the one in the PDF file and everything was connected correct...after no luck I decided to turn it back to the original wiring and still had the same problem. Well, I traced it back to a burnt fuse, "4x4 switch"- states from the manual, second fuse box under the driver dash. Everything works now. I wonder how I burnt that fuse, either way if someone runs into the same problem I have I hope my experience and trouble shooting would be helpful.

Hey jsi. Just saw that post. They should add it to the cheap tacoma mods because, I never saw this.
Thanks BurteSanders for helping me out.

The locker works awesome btw. :)

DDD, I want to do this Locker mod on my 06 TRD Offroad DBL CAB. From the date of this post and with Radio Shack changing the order of the relays all what not. Could you tell where to find what I need as far as info on the ECU and where to find it, and what harness to use ? From what I've read so far, I think I'm missing some info or I'm just really missing it due to lack of sleep/working long hours and you get my drift. Thanks for your help, and anyone else's help that wants to point me in the right direction. I may even need drawings of "stickmen" showing me how to do it. LOL !

Alright, I got my stuff and then I saw there were 2 different wiring set ups. So, I wrote them down, what wire went to what end-post on the relay. The first one I tried of course didn't work. So, I unplugged it and redid the wires and hit the switch. Amazing "Gump, simply amazing." I could hear it when I opened my door and listened really close, and to make it even better, my relay lite up! Little green light inside it told me it was doing its thing, however, the stupid buzzer for the locker kept making noise, and the light kept flashing on and off and nothing was working, so I started it up and moved the shifter in and out of Drive and Neutral and still nothing happened. Then I got a little smarter and barely moved the truck forward a little bit and then it happened! That little kerplunk you hear when it locks in place and then buzzer stopped making noise, and the light stayed on constant. Then I tried to get it unlocked and ran into the same thing all over again. Now, I really got smart cause it was locked in 4Lo I knew I had to move it some more due to being on an incline with the way my driveway is located. I pulled up the hill and when the road leveled out I put it in Neutral and turned the knob to 4Hi, and nothing happened, so I moved the truck back and forth from Drive to Reverse a little and it unlocked and everything went back to normal. Oh yeah, when it was locked in on purpose, the ABS light stayed on constant. When it unlocked, the ABS light went out. So, for what it's worth to you guys that helped me out with advice and links to different threads, "Thank you Big Time" have a good one, and yes, I now know that this locker has to break-in cause it most likely hasn't been used much and everything is a little tight.
