Getting Lifted

Hey there everyone! I'm looking at getting my 2013 Tacoma TRD lifted up with some new boots on it. I want a more aggressive tread pattern, and I had something like Wrangler Duratrac's or something along those lines with a 3" lift. There is so much info and choices out there I don't know where to begin! Does anybody have any recommendations?

 

Oh boy. Here we go!! I've got a few questions for you.

• What are you planning on doing with the truck? Any serious wheeling?
• What is your budget?
• Are you OK with doing some cutting to get larger tires to fit without rubbing?

Well.....
I don't want to do any rock crawling (yet), but some decent rough-housing out there.. I like to camp and fish in remote places etc.. More than anything I want to "toughen" the look of the truck up. I have friends with 35's on theirs-but I do use my truck to commute with as well-so I'm unsure as to how crazy to get. I thought 33's to start-I'm on the fence about the lift size...3 or 6"? I suppose my overall budget is $3000. does Pro Comp make good kits?

Pro Crap?? No. Just no.

 

Other thoughts to add to the pile...........

Build for how the truck is used 80% of the time. If you build for the 20%, you won't enjoy the other 80% nearly as much.

Do it once, do it right. Even if you have to wait to save up for better bits.

Tip: Big tars with gnarly tread look awesome, and work awesome in the right applications. But if puddles in pavement is all they see, you'll lose a lot of grip, ride quality, MPG and $ (for purchase) just to look good parked.

 

That's a very solid budget. I would talk to Marie from @HeadStrong Off-Road as they have deals going on right now.

I recommend a full OME kit, with new UCAs to get you the full 3" of lift. Without the new UCAs, you're looking at 2.5" max to keep it in alignment. You need the full 3" for 33's. You'll also need a CMC (cab mount chop) in order to not rub while stuffing the tires. So, to recap.

• Full OME kit with 885s (or 886s if you plan on adding armor)
• New UCAs
• CMC

All that will run you around 2k I believe, leaving you another grand for some tires.

 

Goodyear Wrangler duratracs are good and have a pretty aggressive tread and side lug pattern, but I decided to go with the BF Goodrich KO2s. I think they look bad-ass!

6" is too much. I have heard it puts too much stress on the CV joints.

Yep!! At 3", all the lift is from the suspension, so you get better articulation, a better ride, etc. It's much more functional. With a 6", you have to do a drop bracket lift which requires cutting of the frame. Those are more for looks than any semi-serious off-roading. You can get pretty crazy with some EXPENSIVE coilovers, but this will be a very very solid lift that is of great quality.

 

Not really true. I run 35s and have 2.5" of lift. Cutting is required though, more than just a cmc.
You can run any size tire without lifting a truck depending on how much cutting you want to do

 

Well, true. Most people don't want to get into all of that chopping and tubbing though. So for all intents and purposes, he needs 3" for 33s with minimal cutting.

 

I would recommend 885s over 887s.
