Post MPG for 2016 Tacoma here

I've had my V6 4x4 SR5 for about a month. First three tanks were right at 20MPGs. The last 2 are a bit better. Mostly back road driving. Pretty light on the pedal. I also increased the tire pressure to 36. My last fill up I compared the computer to the "old fashion way" and they were right on.

 

Hi Everyone, Just joined the group.
Got the 2016 4x4 Tacoma. Have had it for about 1 month.
I have been getting ~15mpg. I have been light on the truck. I am wondering if there is too high for that truck. Have anyone see it this high?
There is now about 3000 km on the truck now.

 

I just got my truck 2 days ago and first 270 miles average has been 23 even. that is 85% hyw 65 to 72. unbelievable!! My 15 Tundra same exact run would be at 14.3 to 15 on winter fuel. Tundra was great and id get another if I needed the size but I don't. Just me and wife and usually just me. Plus she has 14 VW Toureg with diesel in it and we still have our 04 gx 460 lexus too that only has 85k on it and had it since new so room isn't issue if we need it. Man I love these new interiors and looks of the new Tacoma. Plus ride is great in them.

 

2016 TRD OR automatic w 1.5"f/.5"r lift, 265/70 17s, magnaflow muffer, 4600 miles, including a recent 3400 mile trip from Houston, TX to Park City/Snowbasin/Moab UT. Never use ECT 7 let the tranny do its own shifting - 15.6 mpg

 

is that the long bed ?

 

I have a 4x4 Limited and never hit higher than 19 mpg on the highway and average city/highway is consistently 16.8. I have no idea how somebody can get 23-25 mpg!!!!!! Teach meeeeeee!!!!! Pleaseeeee!!!!!! (1756 on odometer now)

 

6648 miles, 21.1 overall, TRD Sport, MT. 90% two-lane mountain roads. I get about 17mpg going uphill in the morning and 29+ coming back. Town is only about 40 blocks long, so no real city driving at all

 

Posted elsewhere, but have an SR5 DCLB that is still stock. Running the stock 245/75/16 Toyo's. Wife and I drove from the Willamette Valley over to the coast and back on Wednesday. From our home, it's about a 60 mile drive each way, including going over the coast range at 1200 feet. I stayed in Drive until we hit the base of the summit, then dropped to S5 going over the top. Once headed down the other side, I just put it back in Drive.

When we got to our destination at the coast, the display was indicating 26.2 mpg. That also coincided with the trip mileage since I filled up before we left town and reset everything. This is the best I've recorded so far.

We drove around some at the coast and then headed home. The road is pretty twisty, so I found dropping to S5 eliminated the shifting and power issues. All of this is in non-ECT mode. Going up over the last couple of miles of the pass on the way back is pretty steep and I popped it into S4 and easily held 60-65 up over the pass. Back to Drive on the other side until we went through town again on the way home.

When we got home, the readout showed 25.7 tank average, with 25.0 trip mileage. I scooted along at 60-65 for most of it.

I'm quite pleased with my truck mileage-wise, and can't quite grasp what's going on with some of the reports of 15-16mpg! I haven't tried running around with the ECT engaged, really haven't had the need. In any case, if I were getting those numbers with a stock truck I'd be asking questions! I left my air dam on which, from reading elsehwhere here sounds like it accounts for 2-3 mpg.

 

They don't make skis that fat on this coast...

Single plank is the way to go anyway!

 

It is. Getting about 18ish on the display, almost all city.

 

Single plank works fine for lift-serviced terrain, a bit more work if you're switchbacking up in the backcountry where this pic is taken. Parked at 11.000',skin up to 13,200', don't need to cross any tracks coming down that way

 

I've been keeping track of my MPG when I go skiing this year, but I've been getting some weird results. Last time I went up, my trip mpg on the ascent was 17.3, and on the descent was 35.3. Same distance up and down, so you'd think the average trip MPG would be 26.3. However, my "average MPG" (reset before the ascent) gave me 23.1 mpg. I'm inclined to believe the 23.1 mpg is more accurate, but I'm not sure why I get a difference. Guessing the downhill MPG is off somehow.
Edit: Found my receipt from this trip. Gassed up before and immediately after. Hand calculated mpg was 24.3.

 

Let's say you got 10mpg going up 30 miles and 30mpg coming down. That's 3 gallons up and 1 gal down. So, 4 gallons for 60 miles. That's 15 mpg (not 20).

 

Thanks, I see my mistake now. The two numbers aren't comparable (or averageable) because the gallons used aren't equal. Doh!

 

Just wondering if this thread is dead? Last post was back in January. Everyone sort of just give up on lousy mpg?

For what it's worth, right at 1000 miles on my 2016 DCSB 2 WD TSS... EXACT SAME MPG on first three tank fulls. Barely 16 mpg!!!! I'm 54 so it ain't like I'm hot roddin' it. Combination of city and highway. Pitiful! EPA should take a look at Toyota's exaggerated window sticker mpg claims, and they should have to pay every owner for the calculated losses. And before you say it can't be done, hear this- when we bought my wife's 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai fudged the MPG ratings. Now, about once a year we get a fuel cost credit loaded onto a debit card that they mail to us for as long as we own the car. The kicker- Hyundai's mpg embellishment was less than what I'm seeing on my Tacoma! I'm 5 mpg from Toyota's estimated average.

This is my first ever Toyota truck. I got sucked into the whole "#1 in quality and service" B.S. YOU KNOW WHAT I GOT? A truck that's been in the shop three times for all manner of B.S.- loose leaf spring u-bolt nuts, no grease in my drive shaft zeros, a transmission that's about as smooth as a dump truck and piss poor gas mileage. Talk about drinking the kool aide... I did. Should have bought a GMC. Of course, if I wait a little while, that's what Toyota will become... The GMC of Japan.

 

There's a Toyota Safety Bulletin that reprograms the transmission, and it works great. There's also a known issue where several earlier transmission production runs didn't get enough ATF. Between the two, most have seen a noticeable improvement (mine improved to about 19).

Yeah, as luck would have it, the last time it was in the shop, I asked about the TSB I had read about here, and they told me it was not available yet. Turns out I missed it by two days. Just really pissed right now, and I would rather not have to take it in AGAIN for a little bit just to get to get to 19 mpg. Right now I'm trying to decide if I should just unload it...

At least it looks good...

 

Have them check the ATF, make sure they do it by the book, and let them do the TSB. Trust me - mine shifts so much smoother now especially in/out reverse and whe cruising on the highway. It also holds higher gears longer up hills.

It's worth the effort.

Just short of 20k, truck runs great, tows very well with 4,000 lb trailer and mpg is great. See Fuelly below, click on 23.4..
