So found out today about this from the mechanic at the dealer. This is crazy.
What in the hell does this kind of design do for the truck?

I agree it's inconvenient, although Toyota claims you shouldn't ever 'need' to replace the fuel filter. Of course that's BS as plenty of people have had to do it on first/second gens.

The vast majority(maybe all?) of newer vehicles have the filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly.

Just for the record, that is NOT a fuel filter in the tank. The "sock" is nothing more than a strainer meant to keep grit and such out of the pump, and therefore out of the injectors. One CAN install an inline filter if he wants to, or believes his local gas is so crappy/dirty that it needs filtration.

3rd Gen lurker here, 2nd Gen owner.

I've got 140,000 on my Taco and never a problem with the so-called filter in the tank that I believe is a screen. (I do run Top Tier fuel)

If you read the 2nd Gen high mileage threads (+400,000) as to what's been fixed, you'll not see an issue with the setup.

It's not good for the consumer but it's great for the parts & service industry.

    What a jackwagon ....lol.
Yea you know what kind of gas I run for sure. And you also believe that the gas fairy exists and produces perfectly clean fuel. You really need to do a google search on gas quality across the USA. I travel very extensively and can tell you firsthand that you never know what you get. Even so called quality high grade. Been there done that a few weeks ago with water in the gas. Now go sit back down and behave Jr.

Unless you are putting in gas from Mexico, you should never have to replace your fuel filter. Don't buy cheap gas. The amount you are saving at the pump for those crap gas brands may cost you in the future.

On one side you have posters that bag on the 3rd gen even though they don't own one and have no first hand experience with them and on the other side you have 3rd gen owners that are emotionally "wrapped up" in their decision. Personally I love my 3rd gen, but I understand there are some lemons out there (see Smitty99's story for just how bad it can be) and pretty much just ignore the non-3rd gen owners that come in to stir the shit pot.

Like @Iamraiderpower doesn't own a 3rd gen. Just comes here to spread uninformed opinions on the truck

OP, if this helps... when I'm inspecting newer vehicles, they all seem to have fuel filter as part of the fuel sending unit in the tank

Youre like a cat. The third gen forum is like your kitty litter box. You're already here anyway roaming around and waiting to release another steaming dump into the litterbox.

User serviceable fuel filters are part of the maintenance package option.

That package also includes a dipstick on automatic transmissions and an OBDII code reader in the glove box.

Actually both of which would be much more valuable than an external fuel filter.

So If I may add in my piece on this issue here...

The intake fuel sock is not adequate to filter out outside contamination... such as sand. On the 3rd gens, our fuel lines are steel hardlines from back to front and operate at pressures close to 400PSI, so you would need on heck of a filter. Gone are the days where we can zip tie inline filters onto the frame rail.

My truck, had sand "infiltrate" the fuel system SOMEHOW, dealership claims it was poured, however there is no evidence supporting it, I.E no sand around the filler neck, etc. Regardless, long story short, the sand trashed the injection and it cost 14,000.. YES, Fourteen-thousand-dollars, to repair.
