That's too bad. At that age I was still placing in class in local soloII events and doing some novice instructing. Being a chubby old man handing the 'hot shoe' kids rolling rides with 200 more HP their tails was great fun. And performance driving school can absolutely make you a safer driver on the street.

You need to find the rev limiter. It's there to protect the motor, set several hundred RPM below any danger level. Letting it wind to the limiter once every couple of weeks will eliminate the need for carbonation concerns. Italian tuneup should ring a bell? :D

I feel the need every time I pull out on the highway. Sometimes I'll put the warning flashers on so the driver coming up fast behind me don't run into me before I can get her up to 60 mph. (I have the 4 cylinder)

Agreed. The regular settings work pretty damn well. I haven't had a problem in the 5k miles I've put on it in the last few months and average around 16mpg with primarily city. I agree with most of the others guys who indicate high highway mpg. I got around 19 driving up in the mountains just last weekend. You just need to find the sweet spots. Use the ECT button when needed and just enjoy the truck for what it is. Yes, some people have better experiences than others (mine's been great, but I've been seeing a lot of bitching too). Shit happens.

Over 8k miles on my truck haven't seen one tank under 20mpg. Mostly average 20-23mpg per tank. I been very happy personally.

Most my trips are under 10 miles. The little country store where i get gas and beer is 4 miles away. The amvets bar is less than 3 miles. The creek i go to fish Most often is 12 miles away. Sand pits i play in and shoot at is 1 mile away.

Shorter trips don't hurt my fuel economy from the looks of it. I live off road. play off road.

Half my driving on road is 55-60mph 40% at about 45mph and the other 10% around 75mph.

Off road mostly 40mph or under... But i do kick up the occasional rooster tail and gun in sliding sideways...

In Florida so low elevation.... I wonder if elevation is what causes the huge variances of fuel economy?

Doesn't make since that some trucks even without lifts and bigger tires get 22and others get 15. Of course not enough people give enough details about which truck which tires what speeds etc. When they list mpg...

My buddy was getting 17mpg in his Chevy... Added a 3 inch lift and it dropped to 14-15. Same tires. Then he Added bigger tires and dropped to 12-13. Lifts decrease aerodynamics... More drag less fuel economy. Bigger tires equal More Weight more drag less fuel economy.. At least that's how i understand it.

Stock TRD OR, stock wheels and tires. Bestop Softopper (weight 65lbs), 16.3mpg on current tank.

I reside at 4500 ft elevation, several passes around me where I often go up to 7,000-ish and back down.

Hwy posted speeds 80mph, secondary roads generally 60-65mph. About 70/30 Highway and secondary vs. non-paved roads.

Yes it is. this is my 1st Toyota 2.7 - Always had 4.0 or other V6 engines. Don't want anything to happen to it so I can get top dollar as a trade in when the time comes.

I doubt these 3rd gens were put through that much testing. If they were, 95% of the issues mentioned on the forum would have been found and corrected before release.

Also having a high revving vehicle in light weight car is one thing. But having it in a truck hauling or carrying various loads is something completely different. Even my old Honda Prelude I had in my early 20's inevitably suffered a headgasket issue.

Are you ignorant of the issues posted by 3rd gen owners on this forum? It appears Toyota rushed this vehicle to production to compete with the GM twins. These issues should have been corrected in pre-production.

You want rigerous testing? Toyota Land Cruisers are tested in 6 continents in harsh environments before release. That is testing.

For ever 3rd gen owner with an issue there are 20 that don't. This is a forum, people with issues will flock here and air their grievances, where as the general owner who is happy with their vehicle does not.

Eh I'm a 3rd gen owner and I'd say Fuego has some pretty valid points.

There are a number of reviews that offer similar responses. The Tacoma gets high marks for off-road, ergonomics and gizmo's, so-so to lackluster reviews on the power train. Car and Driver, on-line reviews, you name it.

I bought the Tacoma due to what the manufacturer states the truck is capable of- 18/23 mpg, 6,400 lb towing (mine is reduced to about 6,000 max towing). It was also roomy enough for my family, and capable of hauling my dogs and guns for my recreational pursuits.

At present I am not seeing those MPG estimates.
At present my truck had a hard time making it over a mountain pass with a moderate load in the bed. It had to turn 5k rpm just to maintain 70mph (speed limit is 80mph).

I plan to get the TSB done on the tranny, then I'm hitching a flatbed and towing my 30hp John Deere tractor with loader and bush hog 75 miles to a friends place. 3,500-4,000 lbs total over Fleshers Pass- a windy, steep route. It will be at that point that I will determine whether or not I keep the truck long term or not.
