Straight from the horse's mouth. Here is 3rd Gen Tacoma Cheif Engineer "Seatbelt" Mike Sweers stating that they had to change things to the final design to try and be better than the Colorado 5 years down the line:

I don't. Longest two trips were skewed. One positive and one negative. Drove up to Flag and came back. The trip up was much lower than average 18 ish and trip back trip back closer to 25. But that's pretty up hill one way and down the next.

All these mpg posts make me laugh....buy a mid 30k truck and want the mileage of a prius....what a petty thing to bitch about imho.

I care because I needed a truck and Toyota put out a subpar product when I know they can do better.

The point is Toyota rushed the 3rd gen to compete with the GM twins. In that process, a lot of issues that should have been corrected in pre-production weren't and a subpar truck was produced. Toyota can do better.

I'm guessing it isn't the reference to being "Lexus Quality". I think he is suggesting that the changes they made in the last year leading up to production = rushed to market. Seems like a stretch.

Then go buy the truck you feel meets your needs and stop slamming what you know nothing about. Get a clue!

Competition is the only way to get a better truck out of Toyota.

Know nothing about? I'm digging up the Chief Engineer's interviews and it's making more sense that this truck was a botch job.

This forum is getting to be a bunch of hypochondriacs and whiners. You read about a tranny shift pblm, you go looking for it, think you have it and start bitchin, only to find out your truck isn't affected or its a simple update now. OMG a howling noise from a hole up front when the wind blows over it. The missing zerk fitting grease syndrome. The differential howling that is affecting millions ! RUN and SELL. All minor BS that people get all worked up about. Its getting ridiculous.

Ahh, a bit of a stretch man. The so called final design changes amount to Door seals, Bed seals, Acoustic Wind Seals, Mirror Profile, a whole bunch of seals, yada yada. So through that you allude to the fact that Toyota rushed everything else to beat the Colorado. Too suspect and doesn't hold weight IMHO.

    all tore up already
few things bug me in this thread:
-3 tanks of gas, truck is still new and i dont care wether you think you are driving it hard or not, everyone does on a new vehicle. mpg will get better with time as you get used to vehicle and things wear in a little.
-you brought the vehicle back different times for very minor issues. 3 times you stated it was in the shop for a total of about 15 min worth of work and none of them actually cause issue now, so it leads me to believe you are probably very particular about your vehicle(rightfully so, but your u bolt torque wasnt effecting anything
-you have a 2wd and had them grease the u joints.... thought 2wd trucks didnt have greasable u joints? maybe they changed them for you or maybe its part of the port installed "tss" package. either way the tires arent helping your mpg, they are hurting it over the stock firestone destination le2 that it was built with.
-one of the larger areas drag coefficient is produced is the wheel wells. its why the insight covered them and every other high mpg vehicle doesnt have them exposed. you added big fender flares...

Don't want to get flamed out for this. But honestly, I think some people just cant be happy. It almost like they look for something to be wrong just to bitch about it.

Plus, like one guy said previously, this is a forum, of course you're gonna read a ton of posts talking about this problem and that problem.

I have had my Tacoma since Thanksgiving. I love it. I haven't had one of these so called "problems". I don't drive it like I stole it but I certainly don't baby it either. It has seen many trips with the ETC button pressed. It has seen a few hard take offs, and several heavy accelerations up and on ramp. I live in Texas, Highway speeds on most of the highways I travel are 70-75, I routinely cruise at 80.

My Info Display says I average about 19MPG. I drive a mix of short and long trips depending on the day and what I may be doing.

I hate to break it to some of you, these MPG numbers are tested on a Dyno. There are so many factors that come into play in real world. For one being YOU. Your weight, your passengers and their weights, your driving habits and style. Also, the environment you live in. The roads you drive one. Most of us probably don't drive on a lot of roads free from pot holes and bumps. Also, the type of road, concrete, asphalt, etc. They all come into play. The Dyno is pretty advanced, but c'mon if someone thinks it can do all that they are sadly mistaking.

You bought a truck. Shut up, and go do Truck Stuff. If you bought a truck for MPG purposes, you're in the wrong market. Go back to your dealer, trade it in and get a Prius and enjoy your 30+MPG.

I get on this site to see what other enthusiasts are doing with their trucks. I try to learn a little more about them, and see what I can do with mine when I finally feel like I can spend money on my truck. Part of my problem is there is other things I would rather spend that money on and enjoy. But, I get on here and I read more threads bitching about these "Problems" and "Why isn't my MPG where they advertise?" Shut up and trade it in.

Don't bitch about something YOU chose and that YOU can fix. Maybe you should of done a little more research, maybe you're just a persn who cant help but bitch.

I'm sorry that life is just that sad for you.

All so-called problems aside ( there are many owners that dont have the tranny issue). We all have gripes and things that bug us about our trucks, but where did Toyota massively drop the ball on the 3rd gen? Personally, I dont see it. Most guys love the powertrain configuration of the new 3rd gens, so what gives?
I own a 2nd gen, so I have no horse in the race.
