So a tow rating means nothing? Basically you're saying "Toyota was full of shit with their stated tow rating and we should know better"?

No offense but if it can't handle 63% of it's stated tow capacity under any condition they flat out lied their arses off.

I won't make my judgement until I tow that load, but my decision will be pretty swift afterwards.

You need to read thru the towing threads most people are getting way better mileage than you not towing........if their mpg are accurate ...lol

Tow ratings mean a great deal, but you can't write off a truck because it doesn't tow well enough for you when you are climbing mount Everest. Flat- mid grades is where the Taco should be judged ( and not the extremes) because at the end of the day its a frigin V6 midsized truck!

Pretty hard to do a whole lot of research on a newly redesigned model isn't it there, Sport?
I kinda go on what the manufacturer ratings are, to ya know, gauge my purchasing decision. If the MPG's and towing capacities are so far off the norm then I think those that want to bitch have certainly earned that right.

Not everyone buys a truck to 'look cool', or slap a lift on it and go hit a dirt road. Some of use trucks like... trucks.

    all tore up already
or what prompted OP into bringing the truck into dealer for u bolt torque? did the rear axle shift? did you break a leaf? i know they come torqued light which could lead to issues down the road, but i doubt there was a real issue with them. which leads me to believe we may have another very sensitive truck owner

Agreed. My AC is always on... This is Florida.

Still get 20-23mpg per tank. Always. If the AC makes a difference it's not that much... But i won't test the theory until it's a lot cooler here LOL

Sure you can. Why wouldn't you? We're only talking about several thousand feet, some curves.. a road. And I'm only towing about 1/2 of the stated rating.

It SHOULD do that handily, no?

Every manufacturer over claims the capabilities of their tow ratings.....HELL YES the 3rd gen will tow 6k plus....on a flat surface going 55 mph for a short distance....take that weight or 63% of that and do some real world towing on roads that are not flat and speed limit is 65 and you will see how much BS there is with the ratings ....then factor in the kool aid drinkers that tow with these weights and report how great it is and how good the mpgs are and you have people thinking that they have a very capable towing machine....and no this was not just directed at Tacomas.....pick any 1/2 ton forum and you read the same crap over and over about how good my vehicle tows and how great the mpgs are......Its a good thing that one of my vehicles can tow the space shuttle....lol

previous dude wasn't happy that it would tow load, over the mountain pass at 80 mph. That last piece is what I thought put it over the top.

For shits and giggles I should take my trailer to the scales and have my weights documented and then videotape the run, lol.

Hell I should have videotaped my wife and I running over to Wisdom, MT a few weeks back with a light load in the bed and truck pegging 5K and losing speed as I went over Boulder pass. That was my first "WTF is this crap" moment, lol.

Not to stoop down to the tinfoil hat realm but this is more likely than you think. Marketers know this shit, they know that one guy coming in and bitching that his truck is a "piece of shit that has given me nothing but trouble" plants that seed of doubt in impressionable minds. It puts people who were maybe passively satisfied with their truck on the defensive and on the lookout. That attitude spreads VERY fast in a community.

It works the other way too. Man I love my brand X item, it's been so awesome to add to my Tacoma. Viral marketing has many faces. It's called viral because of how well it influences.

I could get into a loooooooong winded thing about marketing ('tis what both of my fancy-pants degrees are in) but I won't.

This Tacoma is my 8th truck. I've been towing 'something' for over 29 years now. From very heavy loads to now and the future light loads (and #3,000 lbs is a light load in my book). I've either lived in WV or now in MT- mountainous terrain.

I've not had any issues with either payload or towing in the past. In fact I often had overloaded payloads in the bed and ran mountains just fine. My last truck, a Dodge diesel was, in my opinion under rated for towing.

Now take me, my wife and lets say a moderate payload of 500# in a brand new v-6 Tacoma and head over a little pass called Boulder Montana. The truck can't even keep SPEED downshifted and pegging 5K.

That's pretty pathetic. Of course I'm skeptical of the tow capacity. It makes me wonder how much horseshit Toyota played with their SAE J2807 standard (which they were one of the first to comply with in 2011).

I'm comparing stated ratings, Einstein. Apples to apples.

My experience with payload and towing (within spec) with my other trucks was favorable. This one at the present time- not so much.
