My guess is Toyota will be putting a halt on all Rear Diff replacements very soon. This issue has to have flagged their "tripwire metric" for prolific warranty issues and since others are now looking at having their 2nd rear diff replaced, the rear diff assembly replacement by itself is obviously not addressing the root cause.

They kept mine overnight. Drove it and heard the sound. Tore it down looked for metal fragments. Thought that everything was within spec and no metal shavings found. Diagnosed problem as an "exhaust note," which I don't think they believed themselves. Sound is not really bothering me too much, but is unchanged. At least it's documented, I suppose.

Pop-n-lock tailgate. New radio knobs. Rear step.
As mentioned before, mine has it under light throttle. I can hear it with the radio playing but only barely (9600 miles). I've got a 2000+ mile road trip next week including a few slightly remote sections of New Mexico and Utah (graded gravel roads). I'm hopeful it will hold together and not leave me in a pinch. I hate that I have to fret about it, but no time to resolve it beforehand. I hadn't figured out what it was until a few days ago. Wish me luck.

Dealer is great. Doesn't seem like anyone else has found a fix either.

Like I mentioned, to me the noise is well within the range of normal. I would not characterize it as a "howl" at all. Mesh looks good, and there's no play at all. If it gets worse, we'll address it.

You let the dealer crack open your rear diff assembly to play with the gears?:eek::eek:

5k service happened today, I have the rear diff noise. It is quite apparent even over the radio. Dealer drove, said they noticed the noise, test drove two other tacomas and said it is normal, however if it gets any louder they will address with toyota. They agree it is annoying.

Mine was the 5K service as well. Mine's barely noticeable and really only does it for any length of time when I'm trying to do it.

SR5 DCLB 4X4 V-6 here, no rear diff noise, no front diff noise no axle noise. Just tire noise, non- SR5 stock tires. Voted

    Hope that helps

Not again huh? Sorry to hear that dude.
Did they by any chance say what was actually wrong with the old one? I mean any unusual wear, broken tooth or bearing marks??
I haven't seen any postings on that, but diff is a pretty hefty piece of armor and will usually give some kind of heads up before expiration
Enjoy your truck, it's pretty solid 8200 miles here and I'm surprised the wheels are still on from all I read here from smitty99 lolo!

    Best of luck
    Cheers!

Mine too. Pretty much since new. Build date 5-2014. Been doing it pretty much since new. Finally getting around to addressing it with the dealer. 17,000 miles on it now. Will report back after I get the run around from them. I'm not to optimistic about them fixing it. Hate to sell this truck, but I'm not going to listen to this noise much longer.

Just rolled 5k and no rear end howling yet. I will keep a close ear to see if it develops over the next 5k. 2-16 build date.

Go 60mph exactly, and slightly feather the throttle up and down. It's more of a very subtle whine than a "howl" for me. Seems like most trucks have it to some degree.

I've owned a handful of trucks and we also have a 2016 4Runner. I have never heard this sound coming from any of them. My Service Manager took a ride to hear the noise and right away exclaimed "Hey it sounds JUST like an OLD Ford!!! It reminds me of my old Lincoln I used to have!" He really got a kick out of it. Then he said "This ain't right man, a $40K brand new truck should not be making noises like this. We need to get this resolved for you." Music to my ears.

The sound got louder after about 12k miles. I think I first started hearing it faintly at around 5k miles but it didn't really start bothering me until after 10k

They did, the new one is already starting to make a faint howling noise again. I'm not alone either, there are a few other members here who have had theirs replaced and now the replacement diff assemblies are starting to make the noise again too. Just a matter of time and miles until it gets worse like the old one. I've already notified my dealer and they'll be looking into it again at the next oil change. He said "Man that's not good. Not good at all." Toyota will be on this like flies on shit I imagine, because replacing those rear diffs is going to get REAL expensive REAL fast. And it's also a safety issue, because if that thing is wearing prematurely and fails at some point, it could cause an accident. Imagine towing a trailer up an interstate and that rear diff goes out? My service notes did say that the rear diff had premature wear. Now you might be able to drive on it for 100k miles making that noise before it blows out...but who knows? And why should the paying customer have to wait that long to find out anyway. It needs to be addressed and completely resolved to make it right.

I agree with you on this one. I sold my '05 Silverado z-71 with 180K miles on it and the rear diff noise was identical. The guy who bought it had it thoroughly checked out and it was the only knock at all from the mechanic. They said it would need to be watched, but probably still had a lot of life left in it.

I don't feel like there's an abnormally high risk of catastrophic failure with the Tacoma, but there's something in that driveline that needs a little tweak. It would be interesting to see someone from Toyota look at all of the different models and try to root cause.
