Subbed, would like to make a tire carrier for two spares out of this, one on top and one on bottom, waiting to see some pics of how others have done something similar.

Anyone have a pic of these using a cargo basket inside a topper. I am looking for something that does not go all of the way to the bed floor, and remains below the rear window line. kind of like a shallow tool box

Ever think about making a tire carrier for these bars? With bolt on hinges (2 in font, 1 in back) so it can be angled or raised horizontal for more cargo room? Just a thought.

Yeah there's that or the fabtech one. The versatility of being able to have it horizontal for more bed space would be nice though. I'm sure you've seen the ones people have made on here using two bars and some hinges.
But I remember seeing one where instead of having the second bar (towards the tailgate) installed all the time, the bar was split into two pieces, and were able to fold "in" under the tire (so that they were parallel with the bars holding the tire). Either way, just a thought.

How much weight realistically can the cleats and bed rails hold?

They're surprisingly strong. People have used these for RTT's (three bars).

But......we don't recommend it. If you want to carry something as heavy as a tent, we recommend using a bar that sits on the side rail cap of the bed, and we offer plenty of those.

I was hoping to put a full size spare on it. I've heard of bed rails becoming separated form the bedside and it makes me nervous for those holding weight...

The bed rails are plenty strong enough for that. We would suggest two bars to handle that load.

You might like our Reversible Crossbar a little better. They give you the option of a 3" rise, or a two inch drop.

Any more photographs of this setup? I'd like to see how high it sits in relations to the back window...
