The Taco did great pulling the Jayco 195RB from Phoenix 1100' to Hawley lake 8300'. I took it easy keeping it 55 and under and managed about 10 mpg on the way up. The steepest grades were about 7 percent for 4-5 mile stretches. The taco would would maintain the 60 MPH speed limit up but was running in the 4500 -5000 RPM range to do so. I eventually just setted in behind the SEMI trucks and other travel trailers and crept up the hills at around 3k to conserve fuel. I used ect to keep it out of overdrive and it would pull 55-60 on the flats all day long at about 2500 RPM.
We had allot on monsoon weather including rain, hail and powerfull winds on the road and I hardly knew we were pulling a trailor. All in all very impressed with this truck.
I couldn't get the torque app to read tranny temps just yet but I can say that the coolant temp hardly moved lol.
This truck doesn't pull like my uncles Ram 6.7 Cummins but considering it will hang offroad with a Jeep rubicon, its easy day to day drivability and overall price I'd still have to say its the best all around vehicle I've ever owned and would have no issues pulling our trailor anywhere in the nation any time of the year.

 

Hey guys anyone know why my 6 speed manual would be shaking while I tow. Like a steady shake. Stops when I let off the gass

 

From your aviator pic looks like you have significant sag in the rear on your truck. My guess is drive line angle from having to much weight on the tongue. Try backing the sxs back over the trailer axle till the truck and trailer set a little more level and see if that helps.

 

I thought many that too but I had it hooked up today moving a swing set and its doing the same thing

 

Greased your ujoints? All gears? Rpm range?

 

Everything greased. Depending on load 2500 -4000 rpm. Shakes all gears. Without a trailer is has a slight jerking almost like torque converter shudder on a auto trans with moderat to heavy acceleration

 

There is no way that much sag should cause a problem with the driveline. If it does, there is a SERIOUS design flaw.
You can get a lot more sag than that with a bed loaded to capacity...

What does the trailer and ATV weigh in that pic?

 

The Polaris general is probably 11-1200 and that's a trailer I made it probably weighs a little over 2000. Had it weighed when I titled it but I don't have the registrayltion on me

 

So I might be trying to fix something that isn't broke here but wondering what the experts think about running an auxillary electric fan on a toggle on the tranny cooler. I haven't had any issues pulling our trailer but everytime we leave the Phoenix area we're immediately hit with 7-8 percent inclines at 115F degree temps outside and thought a little extra protection in the hills wouldn't be bad. I do know that too cool ATF can be bad too so thinking I could just toggle on and off while I'm pushing higher revs while climbing. It'd be just a matter of running a wire to the switch-pro so easy install but wondering what some negatives might be? Thanks

 

i would install a gauge first, see what its running at then go for it

 

Had to rescue my sister in her subaru that went into limp mode. Taco did awesome! Even got 15 mpgs on the 25ish mile trip.

 

My ScanGauge shows my ATF temp is normally in the 195+ dF area when not towing in 90 degree temps here in south Mississippi. I doubt your aux fan would cool it too much when towing in AZ.

 

So i towed my boat 200 miles down to the keys to catch some lobster. I took the high way there and got around 7.5 mpg going around 70mph. On the way back i took us41 and got 10mpg averaging around 55-60mph. the boat and trailer weighs around 4300lbs loaded. plus the 4 200 lb guys in the truck. If the truck had more power it would of been a effort less tow. The lack of tq really shows even on flat florida roads at highway speeds.

In comparison our x5 diesel did this same trip last year and got 18mpg. I could easily over take people and braking was almost unaffected(sport package with 275 front and 315 rear sport tires). But the unibody of the x5 didn't take the movement of the trailer as well and would jostle the truck around. Also the noise from the trailer would resonate threw the entire vehicle.

over all the tacoma did great. But i will be avoiding the highway if i can.

 

Well, the stay at Goose Island was great and the fishing was so-so. After towing around 5,500 pounds for 200+ miles back and forth I've decided to trade-in the Tacoma for a larger truck. It simply doesn't have enough low-end torque for the trips we will be making in the future in the Rockies and other similar terrain. The last 20 miles heading down to Rockport is due south and we had about a 15 MPH headwind. On a perfectly flat road it would not hold 60 MPH without downshifting to 3rd every 1/4 mile or so. We didn't have RVing plans in mind when I bought the truck last year. Oh well, as they say in Louisiana, C'est la vie.

I would look into a larger atf cooler. The longer it's in the cooler, the lower it's output temperature.

The lack of torque means nothing when you are trying to hold a constant speed on a flat road. That is all horsepower.
