15K Service

I just had my 15K service done and invoice shows "Install MOC Multi Clean", what the heck is this? Injector cleaner? Is this normal for a dealer to do?

what did they charge for the service?? and yeah....im pretty sure thAts top engine cleaning or injector cleaning.

 

The service was 141.95 but after oil/tire/battery service kit/Multi Clean it came to 184.07 without good old NYS tax. This seems high. I do my own brakes, oil changes etc...normally but this is my 1st new car and I wanted to keep my warranty status pristine. Is this the going rate? My 5k and 10k were only 50.00 for oil/tire rot.

yeah, sounds about right sonce i think the fuel service is right around $69 to$79. honestly though, you can do the service yourself for alot cheaper, and your warranty will still be intact............if something happens that you need warranty work, they gotta prove whatever you did caused whatever problem you have at the time. and to be honest.......im not too sure i trust the dealer to do the fuel service anyway.........they may charge for it without actually doing it. they had supposedly cleaned the throttle body on the 06 prerunner i had, but i checked it about 5 minutes after i got it back.....they hadnt touched it. just food for thought.

 

The older I get the less trust I have....hehehe I always find when you do things yourself you always get the best service. I will probably do the next major service myself, its a 30 min drive for me to the dealer and with gas the way it is, it will probably be worth it.

 

i dont blame ya man. for the next service, which will be your 20k......all it is is visual look over of everything, and oil and filter. rotate tires too. dealer charges way too much for most anything they do anyway......and if you do it yourself, as myself and lots of others here do.......you'll save money and you'll know its done right.

 

i could see them doing this if the truck had lots and lots of miles on it, but for as few of miles as there are on his truck...........seems kinda pointless to me.

 

You do not have to do the 15K,30K,45K checkups to keep your warranty. This is just a ploy dealers use to make more $$$ off of you. I have never done them on any vehicle I have owned. And have never had problems getting warranty work done.

As for the myth it will make your vehicle last longer, I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee that had 180,000 miles on it, when I traded it. The only problem I had with that vehicle was a water leak in a coroded freeze plug. I just did the oil changes when needed and the usual, brakes, & tires.

The only thing needed in the first 15K miles are the oil changes, with tire rotations @ every oil change, or every other per your choice. The Toyota manual states nothing about oil flushes, or FI cleaning, so if the service writer did not discuss it with you in advance, they should not have done it.

 

I do a lot of my own work. I have never gone in to a dealer and said give me the n0,000 mile screw job. If / when I go to the dealer for something I don't feel like doing, I just order up everything a'la'cart. My '03 Corolla has almost 150K on it; all I have had the dealer do is one brake job, flush the transaxle once, change drive belt, and flush coolant plus change oil when they did each of these visits. Never had a problem and was complimented by the service manager on how good condition my car was in. (All I did was change oil every 5K and put in a new air filter when the old one was dirty.)
Same thing with my last truck which was a '91 Toy xtra cab 4x4. Put 249K miles on it and only had the dealer do a handlful of items over 17 years. When the truck had about 48K on it, the water pump went out and severely overheated the engine. Toyota stepped up to the plate and change the whole cylinder head and several other top engine items without ever asking any questions, all under warranty.

So, bottom line when a service adviser or some punk kid at a quick lube tries to sell you "the works", say "no thanks" because you're confident that your toyota is built to last and doesn't need to have work done that the owner's manual doesn't spell out.

 

Sounds like a plan. I have a 97 Camry that I did all my oil changes, brakes, starter. The only think i wouldn't tackle was a water pump, timing belt as I needed the car for a vaca trip a few days after pump died. No time to do it myself. I was amazed at how easy the starter was to change, right from teh top of the engine...Thank You Toyota!!!! I guess I just was a little freaked that it was a new truck. My Camry has 120k and sounds like a new car still. Even AC works with no service done yet.......I hope she can't hear me....hehehe

I see your in SC, my son just moved down there a year ago and is in Spartanburg. I must have driven past you at some point when I was down for a visit in June. Its hotter than the blazes down there! He's not coming back up to the great white north anytime soon, I made him shovel the white stuff too much when he was here....lol

A few years ago I took my wife's 98 4Runner to the local Toyota dealership for a timing belt, water pump, belts & hoses job. The next time that I went to change the oil I noticed some crappy work that the dealership had done. The fan shroud on the radiator was put on crooked and ready to fall off into the fan and then I found broken off bolts on the skid plate below. I noticed this because I always removed the skid plate when I changed oil so the oil didn't run everywhere. The moral of this story is....Don't always think that your getting quality work performed at the local Toyota dealership. It also made me wonder if they tensioned the timing belt right when they put that on!!!!

 

For things like this, have an independent, toyota certified mechanic do the work. You will save a little bit of money (maybe a lot), they won't try to upsell you things that you don't need done and they will do a great job because their personal livelyhood depends on it. The guys that are out working on their own typically have a lot of experience.
I have done this on a couple of repair items and was pleased with the outcome.

 

I had a local shop do the pump and belt. I have been taking the harder type work there for years and they are great. Plus they are only a few miles from the house. I know what your saying about the stealership. I had my hitch/wiring done by a third party as I wanted a professional looking job, after 4 visits they got it right. Blew 10 fuses in WV on a trip to SC until I stopped at a local Wallmart looking like Chevy Chase when he found out Wally World was closed. I got me a pair of cutters and that black box got cut loose from my harness and what do you know, my lights were back. I was not ahppy that day. From now on my wiring will be done by me which I should have known better!
