Just dropped of my truck at the dealer, told the service advisor that I am having issues with my transmission and that I went on tacomaworld forms and found a TSB. He told me that I shouldn't mention tacomaworld because that will not work in my favor. He said that on this website is only customers talking about issues that sometimes arent true. I took out the TSB forum and he stood quite, he went to do double check with his tech and did realize there is a TSB. So to make a long story short he took my truck in and they are doing the software update lol..

Lol, yeah I brought a copy of the TSB to the dealership to avoid anything like that.

Just spoke to my service rep and made an appointment for my 5000 mile service next Wednesday. I mentioned the TSB and he they'd be able to do that at the same time. Keeping my fingers crossed.

WOW! Just had mine done on wed. Took in twice already and they couldn't repeat. Mine did have the harsh 1st to 2nd, but had lag from reverse to drive, and the cruise control issues.

Initial impressions: the lag from r to drive is completely gone so far. I got used to a 1/2 second to second pause and up to a six second pause in cold weather or after the truck sitting a few days. It locks instantly now like it should. Nothing like pulling out the drive way and stopping traffic. I knew that shit wasn't right. Last time I experienced that my friends 79 caprice's tranny took a dump.

1st to second and low end power seems acceptable. I was a bit dissapointed early on. The update is a life saver for me.

No mpg data and no cruise control test yet. But, very happy so far.

Yea I had a lowered mustang for a few years. Much happier now, albeit I miss the speed. Thanks man, that's exactly where that was.

Does anybody have any more useful information about how their truck performs other than for the first 50-100 miles?

Seems most posts are about their appointment time, their experience at the dealership or the ride home.

Just curious as to how the update does a few weeks down the road.

Uhhh, I personally wouldn't recommend mentioning TW to these dealers... they immediately roll their eyes and say "don't believe everything you read on the internet." I would be smart about it and keep this site as knowledge-base for us and ammo in your back pocket. 0.02

Called my dealer at 4 and told him I was having issues with cruise control erratic shifting and a flare every once in awhile from 3rd to 4th. Asked if I could come in for the TSB and he said he has heard of it and will call back in a half hour. He called back right away, found the tsb, explained it to me and said we'll get you taken care of first thing in the morning. Appointment is at 9 :) Charles Toyota in Norwich, CT has been great.

I am resisting commenting on this for fear that I may be experiencing the "anti" placebo effect. Very interested in what others think about feel after a few hundred miles of mixed driving.

If he wants the results from users after a few weeks, then he should come back about August 10th +-, and see what the guys say that had it done on the 15th of July.. Right..??

Take a look at the PDF of the TSB. It lists all the VIN ranges. 1st post on this thread.

The TSB was issued July 14th, so, if you want 3 week results from someone having it done, it seems reasonable to not ask for that now, because it just ain't available....ie: It's only been 14 days since the TSB was issued...

I've been cautious to post anything, but here goes. I've got 900 miles on mine post TSB. I did a 350 mile hwy round trip, the majority of the rest is city driving, or just outside of town driving.
    • the P/R to D is completely gone
    • the shifting flare is still present when cold, not as bad, but still present. I'm interested to see if it continues when it gets colder.
    • surge when stopping was gone, but now is back and is the same pre TSB
    • the throttle/shifting is much more sensitive (which can be both a positive or negative depending on your driving style)
    • it does hold gear a longer in cruise, but the biggest difference is that it doesn't shift automatically to 4th from 6th, and kicks out of 4th to 5th/6th much quicker instead of getting stuck there. I rarely use cruise at all anyway.
    • it does seem like its trying to revert to my previous driving patterns, but wants to shift much more when city driving post TSB
    • it seems to want and rev-match a lot when city driving now, which it rarely, if ever, did pre TSB
    • I've noticed my mpg has dropped about 2 mpg in the city, but I'm running the AC a lot more now too. However, I contribute this to more shifting in the city post TSB, where before I could lug around in 6th easily and get 23 or 24 mpg. I always got better mpg in the city than on the highway in my particular truck.
    • I've notice a little more than a 1 mpg decrease on the highway (w/o cruise), because it won't lug and is much more responsive to shift to 5th when it should.
    • Seems like the sweet spot on the hwy is now 75-77 mpg (which could also be impacting the mpg, obviously), where before it was 65-67 for my specific truck and location. At 75-77 it will hold and pull most hills around here on I-44 (SW MO, some big hills towards the Branson area, but we still hit 4th gear on these.)
So, the verdict is still out for me. I loved to try to always squeak 23-24 mpg out of the truck, as it always made me smile. I have not been able to achieve this post TSB. I am much, much more satisfied with how it runs on the highway that pre TSB w/o using cruise. I am unsatisfied with how it drives in the city now, because it shifts much more than before. I'm not an aggressive driver, but the truck wants to be more aggressive.

So I've had my truck for less than a week now. While I was waiting for it to leave the factory I told my sales guy I wanted to be sure if this truck fell into the TSB that I wanted it taken care of before I picked it up. He said, "I spoke to my Chief Tech and he said Toyota is doing their very best and calibration has been revised to address the condition of all incoming trucks."

Now I have checked my VIN number and it appears to be on the TSB list on page 1 here. There is no sticker under the hood stating anything has been done.

So question to you guys, how apparent are the problems? I've been driving manuals for 13 years now and am not quite sure what to expect from an auto. It's definitely not the smoothest transmission, not like my wife's Highlander. There seems to be a short lag from R to D and P to D but I can't say it's crazy enough for me to think it's bad. It also feels like there is some stumbling at low MPH in the city. I've yet to get on the highway and use the cruise.

I did notice on the test truck I drove, at a different dealer, it had trouble keeping gear at 75 mph. Kept switching on me. I guess I'll need to get mine on the highway to see.

Part of me worries I've read so much here on the subject that I'm looking for problems. Thoughts?

    Thanks!

I sell Toyota, the issue is most of the sales advisor's / Mechanics have never owned a Tacoma. I'm on my 5th one and I defiantly can tell the difference between the 4.0 and the 3.5. I'm the first one in the dealership to say something about this issue. I just had my ECM re-calibrated, after I had them fill the Trans fluid. Issue solved, now for some back road driving...I can now confidently advise my customers whats wrong with their Tacoma's when they ask.

Thanks for your honest opinion. I am really close to trying to decide @ getting the TSB done myself. I would hate to get it and loose some gas mileage. I can't get 24 mpg, but I have seen some 23. I use cruse control as much as possible and would like to see the thing stay away from 4th gear as much as possible unless I needed it.

It's probably a combo of relearning, running AC and hotter temps in general. It should go back up, but for the trade off on the way it runs now, far outweighs the mpg. We will see in the fall when it cools down, but I'm not really worried about it. Some notice an increase in mpg, but they probably don't drive in the city as much as I do either.

Just had my transmission in to check for low fluid level, which they found, and to have the newest software update downloaded. When I arrived at the dealer service center I came prepared with the TSB printed out. Sure enough the Service Manager started to do this dance with saying he knew nothing about this service bulletin, ya right I thought. After spying out my vin number he proudly announced your vehicle is not include after looking at the first page of the TSB. I simply said if you read more then the front page you'll see its included. Sure enough when I picked up the truck a day latter the service invoice said added fluid to transmission and installed new software. So far it seems to me the transmission is not shifting between 4th to 6th gears as often and is running smoother. Only time and mileage will tell if this will resolve the transmission problems.

I'm really close to the 20,000 mile service and went by the dealership today and get a feel for what they knew about the 0077-16. They certainly hedged a bit, but I think they will do the right thing I hope. I told them I'm getting by just fine the way it is, but if it could be better, I'll take it !!

Dropped off at Koons Annapolis last night and picked up this evening. Handed the guy my printed out tsb and they appreciated the heads up. These guys deal with so many models and issues I'm sure it's not easy to keep up on it all. Kevin called me today and said the 5000mile service was finished and they did the trans tsb. Tonight when I picked it up, I looked under the hood and there was no sticker. Waited around for 15 minutes while the only guy left did a song and dance about it. Then Richard came out and explained it was in the system. I was insistant about the sticker and they said they would get it done on Tuesday when I go back for hood support glue. Drove a mile home and didn't notice anything different, will see tomorrow on a weekend trek to WV.
