Is there a particular reason why you were/are against wheel spacers? Trying to do my research before buying. Spoke with All-pro on their spacers and they claim in the 10+ years they have offered they have never run into any issues with them on or off-road.

I am not necessarily against them just don't think they are the best option. Sometimes they are necessary for certain peoples applications but in most cases wheels wth correct backspacing are sufficient.

I put spacers on once and got wierd vibes and tire wear. Had a hard time keeping them torqued even with lock tite. Wheels with the correct backspacing are just a more solid option. Why worry about 48 wheel studs when you can limit it to 24.

Understandable. Is there an advantage to running the 255/85/16 sized tires instead of something wider (i.e. 285/75/16)? I'm in SLC too and live downtown and drive to Bluffdale for work each day. Would love the increase in MPG and skinnier tire for winter driving but seems like the norm is to go with that 285 and would hate to sacrifice traction...

Honestly the only thing better about the 285s in my opinion is that they are easier to find. I couldn't find the 255 85 16s when I needed tires last so I changed. Had they been easier to find I would have went with the 255s hands down. My MPGS went down by about 2 mpg when I changed to the wider tires.

I think I'm sold on the BFG KO2 for its reviews/winter traction but I wish they gave the 255 option.

    If I had 17" wheels I would have 34" x 10.5 x 17s on my truck now.

DUDE! I didnt know this size existed. I may be investing in a set of 17" trd pro 4runner wheels and getting this size.

Yeah the size is perfect in my opinion. I would like to try it out but at this point I am pretty well set with my 16s and 285s. Don't want to change anything now. Plus I just regeared. So if I decide to go up a tire size it will be hard to not just get 35s.

Any advantage you see to running a 17 over a 16? I have the TRD beadlock on mine and have been back and forth on whether to get 17's or not based on looks alone (the 17 seems more proportioned).

The only thing I dislike about bigger wheels is the fact that you have less tire. A 33" tire on a 16" rim is going to have more sidewall and surface area to grip than a 33" tire on 17" wheels. It may be negligible for most people though. I like smaller rims personally.

I dont think there is a big difference. The amount of rubber would be the only thing.

How are the 285s treating you @zscott

They are good. I took a hit in gas mileage. Dropped down to 12-15mpgs when I was previously at 15-18 with the 255s. Now that I regeared to 4.56s I got 17.8 my first tank highway and have been averaging 15.4 city driving.

how was the re-gearing process? Ill only do it if i go to 35s i think. Its really tempting to go to 35's but then i think aoubt all of the cutting, grinding, smashing, welding, etc. and i start looking at the 285s again.

Wierd question.... do you have any mods on your truck that your regret or wish you would have done differently? For instance, I recently went back to a stock rear bumper and have been super pleased. I was looking through the beginning of your build and its hard not to like this shot right here..... Simple, tough, and beautiful!!

Where did you have it regeared at? What did it run if you don't mind me asking?

Kevin with Six States in Orem did the work and I would highly recommend him. I bought the gears from East Coast Gear Supply. Labor at Six States was about $1000 with taxes and everything for front and rear differentials.

I dont really have any regrets with the truck. The biggest "regret" if you want to call it one is that I feel like I have spent a lot of time and money trying to "prefect" a system that works for my needs. I wish I could have somehow seen into the future to now and known what I do know when I got the truck. It would have made the build process quicker and less expensive. That being said, prior to this truck I had little to no knowledge of vehicles. The only thing I have taken this truck into the shop for is gears and alignments. Everything else I have done myself resulting in a awesome learning experience. The truck now is to a point where I just want to go use it each weekend and keep the parts I have maintained well.

If you had a brand new second gen today what mods would you do? You have a $5k budget... GO!
