    Hiking at night is safe if you have tritium night sights on your pistol. Take a headlamp too.

    that gun won't help if you slip off a trail in the dark and break your leg in a remote gully.

    This is what I'm talking about, I'm not too worried by the animals. Just more the terrain. I'm familiar with most places during the day but have never been out at south sisters or other mtns at night

    I like to watch the sunset from the top of a mountain. Mt. Pilchuck is my favorite, I've hiked down it many times in the dark.

    heh. a reliable buddy along is, IMHO, a much better thing. dog is better than nothing, and a good dog /could/ save you, but a 2nd person can do lots of stuff that a dog can't. gun as signal only works if someone is in earshot, and/or you got a LOT of ammo to fire that 3 round SOS over and over til someone hears.

    me, I'm in my 60s, fat and lazy, my wilderness trekking days are long past, I rarely hike more than a couple miles anymore. my son and daughter are in their 20s and backpack, but always with at least one friend, AND a good dog, and are smart about all the usual rules, letting me or another responsible person where they are going in, when and where they are coming out, their approximate route with possible options, and suggested regional emergency folks to notify if they are more than so late. then they check back in when they are back to civilization. my son (the older) was particularly good at this (but also did the gnarlier trips), always had rations and water for an extra couple days, and gave me a 2-day window before calling for help, only once he checked in near the end of the window, and that was because they spent an extra day exploring some amazing rocks (he's a geology student).

    I see what you mean by using an older lens where I can control the aperture. Overall, I guess it's not bad given the value of money spent. The DOF is so thin it's kind of annoying and focus is hard to control.

    I'll just have to get an actual macro lens in the future while settling with this for now. I love macro shots of bugs!

    Currently living on a budget after deciding to go back to school full-time for a career change :oops:

    @jasclair you get yours yet?

    wide angle lens on a tripod, ISO 100, f/8, bulb exposures of around 2-10 seconds. wait til you hear a group of fireworks launch (thump! thumpity-thump!), then open the shutter and close it after the firework has done its thing.

    There's a little lever on the mount side of the lens that the camera use's to adjust the aperture. If you use your finger to move it it will stop the aperture down some to increase the DOF. It's not an exact science and you won't know the aperture but it can be done. You can grab a cheap older lens from KEH.com in BGN condition to use for it and it will be cheap and you will know the aperture then.

    Canon EOS lenses are entirely electronic control, there's no mechanical linkage at all between the body and lens.

    Does that include the EF or whatever the lens was before this last change?

    EF are the lenses for EOS. ALL canon autofocus lenses since the first film EOS in the late 80s are EF (or EF-S or EF-M, same thing applies). The older Canon manual focus system were mechanically linked, and not compatible with EOS.

    Gotcha. I'm not very familiar with the Canon line.

    No not yet, hopefully this Monday or Tuesday... What about stacking photos in prefer to fix the aperture situation? This way you can get the entire flower .
