    Christ, half of the people I see on the roads don't even know how to do a basic trucker's hitch. Their knowledge of knots ends at their shoelaces. Thank god for ratchet straps for dopes like that.

    Absolutely true, but much less flexible (use-wise) than rope. I use ratchet straps and keep 6 in the truck, but I've also got a 50 foot coil of rope in there because it's so much more flexible than straps for tying down something awkwardly shaped.
