I'm new and if there is this question on the ATF i apologize.
I recently changed my ATF and was told to measure what I drained, so i took out 2.5L when I started to refill the fluid level started to overflow at 1.7 APX. I was told at the Toyota parts counter to replace what I took out. I felt that the extra oil may have drained from the torque converter. so I installed the level and added the the missing oil.

To me this is the a very poor setup and doomed a DIY shop.

I find this a very confusing method of checking levels and being sealed very dangerous. Is there some vent somewhere for expansion of the oil if you slightly overfill?
Does anyone feel that I may have done this wrong?

Was it running when you added fluid back? As the vehicle sits fluid drains back into pan from torque converter and internals. If the engine wasn't running the pump wasn't pumping fluid keeping components full that's why you had extra.

Easy method is to put in what you took out. Proper method is to do temp check mode. You can find that in the 2nd Gen tips and tricks thread.

Thanks, I felt that after all the galleries and places that it could drain from refilled I would be at the correct level again. when t run it for a few days around town I will check the level again and top up if it requires it. Thanks for confirming the extra oil difference. and the fact that there is possibly a missed step in the how video on You tube.

V6 or L4? I'm not familiar with L4 measuring method; these remarks pertain to V6.
Overflowing at the fill plug or at the overflow plug? If at the fill plug, I can't see it overflowing there unless the truck was not leveled, or the trany was overfilled to begin with. If at the overflow plug, it don't matter - that's used if you are measuring the level using the temp range method. It's time to properly measure the ATF level. An IR tool is the most convenient way to measure the temp requirements to measure the ATF level, and it's been proven to be just as accurate as Techstream or the ODB jump wire method.

IR gun is not as accurate. With IR, you are measuring the temp of the outside surface and not actual fluid temp.

You are wrong in assuming the temperature variance is of significant difference. The following users effectively proved this point. I've used this method in four ATF flushes in my Taco and wife's Lexus with no apparent ill effects to the tranys.

When warming up and fluid temp shows 125* and I can put my hand on the pan and it be cool, I call that significant. Doesn't matter, I'll do it my way, and you do it your way.

You must have some callused hands ;), and/or high tolerance for heat - feeling is not very scientific. Them dudes employed the scientific method. But, if I read your vibe right, you can't teach an old dog new tricks...

I do facilities repair and maintenance, IR and IR imaging have their places. I don't expect to get an accurate fluid temp off of a pipe surface or sump surface.

The 4 cylinder 2.7 liter automatic still has a dipstick for checking the transmission fluid. :)
